Tokyo Symphony Orchestra Celebrates 80th Anniversary with Free Concert Livestreams

In 2026, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra (TSO) will proudly mark its 80th anniversary, and what better way to celebrate this milestone than through a series of free livestreamed concerts? In collaboration with Dwango Co., Ltd., the TSO has announced a standout lineup for the 2026/27 concert season. This live streaming initiative will commence in April 2026 and run through March 2027 on the popular "Niconico Live Broadcasting" service, particularly focusing on classical music through the dedicated channel, "Niconico Tokyo Symphony Orchestra (Nico-Kyo)."

The highlight of this season involves the new appointment of Lorenzo Viotti as the fourth music director of the orchestra. His inaugural performance is set for May 17, 2026, at the Muza Kawasaki Symphony Hall. Here, he will conduct Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 and Mahler's Symphony No. 1, famously known as "Titan."

Moreover, the celebrations will include the orchestra's 80th-anniversary concert on September 19, 2026, featuring Schmidt's oratorio "The Book of Seven Seals." The repertoire promises an array of powerful compositions and appearances by esteemed guest conductors, including Hubert Soudan, Pablo Eras-Casado, and Ryūya Shimono.

This journey began back in March 2020, when the TSO conducted a historic no-audience concert broadcasted live, making headlines in the orchestral world. The TSO's innovative approach to concert attendance received immense praise, leading to the launch of the Nico-Kyo channel in June that same year. The channel has since flourished, delivering regular livestreams of TSO performances. Remarkably, audiences can enjoy these concerts for free without needing a subscription, and they can rewatch the recordings within a specified time frame.

The TSO is committed to enhancing the viewing experience by integrating interactive elements unique to Niconico. During breaks and after concerts, viewers can enjoy interviews with the conductors and soloists as well as farewells from departing musicians. This interactive feature allows the audience to feel a closer connection to the orchestra members, allowing for a vibrant commentary space.

In a statement from the TSO, they expressed heartfelt gratitude to the viewers and those supporting the channel as it ventures into its seventh year. Their innovative "comment-enabled free live streaming" format has garnered a loyal audience, eventually motivating many to experience live performances in concert halls. This season, featuring a well-curated lineup of eight exciting concerts including the debut of Music Director Lorenzo Viotti, is an event fans shouldn't miss.
