SSFF & ASIA 2025: An Evening of Cinematic Excellence
On June 11, 2025, the Short Short Film Festival & Asia (SSFF & ASIA) held its prestigious award ceremony at LINE CUBE SHIBUYA, celebrating the art of short filmmaking. This year’s festival attracted an astounding 4,592 entries from around the globe, confirming its status as one of the largest international short film festivals in Asia, officially recognized by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
During the ceremony, a total of 13 awards were presented, including the highly coveted George Lucas Award. This year, the grand prize went to Fabian Munsteyarm's film
Torn Pantyhose, which dazzled judges with its profound exploration of human emotions within a limited timeframe.
A Night to Remember
The event was graced by well-known personalities, including the film festival ambassador LiLiCo and other prominent guests such as actress Juri Ueno, actress Manami Konishi, and members of the popular group JO1, Sousei Ohira and Ryohei Odai. Their participation not only added glamor to the evening, but also highlighted the festival’s aim to bridge connections among international talents.
Opening the Ceremony
The ceremony kicked off with remarks from SSFF & ASIA's representative, Tetsuya Bessho, expressing gratitude to the creators from 17 countries who participated this year. LiLiCo shared her excitement regarding the festival, stating, “While awards are important, the connections we form here are what truly make this festival special.”
Award Announcements
An esteemed panel of judges, including industry veterans and filmmakers, presented various awards during the ceremony. In addition to the George Lucas Award, the festival introduced new categories this year such as the CyberAgent Vertical Award and the Saishin Award supported by CRG, choosing first-time winners that encourage innovation in short film production.
Grand Award - The George Lucas Award
This year’s outstanding film,
Torn Pantyhose, not only won the prestigious Grand Award but also received accolades for its compelling narrative that embraces the essence of short filmmaking. Bessho lauded the film, stating, “In a mere limited setting with few characters, it beautifully encapsulated the love and struggles of humanity.” Fabian Munsteyarm expressed his profound gratitude to his cast and crew and remarked on the honor of receiving an award named after George Lucas, someone who has inspired him since childhood.

The festival also saw the introduction of the first Horror & Suspense category, with winners selected from intense finalists. The inaugural recipient of this award was
ABYSS by Tetsu Nogami, who shared his excitement and gratitude for allowing his film to be presented in a festival setting.
The CyberAgent Vertical Award was awarded to the professional collective
Koneko Film, highlighting the importance of innovative approaches to short filmmaking, particularly in vertical formats, an increasingly popular medium in the digital age.
A Spotlight on Future Creators
As part of its commitment to nurturing young talent, the U-25 Project Best Short Award was won by 20-year-old director Kyu Shibata for
Happy Valentine’s Day. Presenting the award, JO1’s Sousei Ohira commended the young filmmaker on his work, encouraging aspiring creators to pursue their dreams with vigor.
Celebrating Contributions to Short Form Cinema
The Global Spotlight Award acknowledged directors Joe Weyland and Finn Konstantin for their contributions to the expansion of short film culture. Their recognition emphasizes the festival’s mission to celebrate and uplift filmmakers who enrich the cinematic landscape.

As the ceremony drew to a close, Tetsuya Bessho took to the stage once again, thanking all participants and congratulating the winners for making history and capturing the essence of storytelling in the short film format.
