Among the dedicated volunteers was travel nurse Bianca Salvaggio, who returned to Camp Boggy Creek in Lake County, Florida for her third consecutive year. With nine years of pediatric intensive care experience under her belt, Salvaggio's journey began in 2011 when she first volunteered as a counselor. This rewarding experience ignited her passion for nursing. 'Camp helped shape my career trajectory,' Salvaggio recalled. 'It provided me with the opportunity to work with children and medicine, which ultimately led me to become a nurse.'
A poignant aspect of the camp experience, according to Salvaggio, is witnessing the transformation in children as they discover a sense of belonging. Many arrive feeling isolated due to their medical conditions, but at SeriousFun camps, they find peers who share similar experiences, supportive friends who celebrate their victories, and opportunities to engage in activities once deemed impossible.
