The General Incorporated Association DAC Mirai Support Cultural Project Organization, based in Taito, Tokyo, is currently accepting submissions for the 14th Mirai-Support Art and Essay Contest, which is backed by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Amid the rapid advancements of AI in a VUCA world, there is a growing need among parents and educational institutions to foster non-cognitive skills in children through their unique expressions.

Rising Interest in Non-Cognitive Skills

There has been a significant surge in emphasis on non-cognitive skills—abilities related to mindset, motivation, and interpersonal relations that cannot be quantified by standard educational metrics like grades or test scores. According to a survey conducted by the e-Learning Institute, around 60% of parents claim they are well-informed about non-cognitive skills, highlighting their high levels of awareness. Furthermore, over 90% of parents expect educational systems to better nurture these skills, believing that doing so will aid future academic and career prospects. Moreover, about 70% of parents feel the importance of such skills has increased compared to the previous year.

This increased importance can be attributed to the rapid societal changes and unpredictability characteristic of the VUCA era. There’s a recognition that mere accumulation of knowledge is insufficient; instead, children need to cultivate critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and collaborative skills that generate new value.

In response to these societal challenges, the contest seeks to provide an outlet for children to recognize the small challenges in daily life and moments of familial bonds through their art and writing. This allows for a form of expression that cannot be replicated by AI, fostering children’s non-cognitive skills and self-efficacy, essential for thriving in the evolving landscape. Participation in this contest is an opportunity for children to discover their potential and take their next steps towards personal growth.

Initiatives to Lower Participation Barriers

To support participants, the contest is designed to encourage “the courage to take a first step” along the two themes of annual execution: "Family Bonds" and "Adventure, Challenge, and Change." As part of their efforts, they provide support materials including instructional videos tailored for groups and individuals. These videos also cater to children who find writing challenging, with insights offered by professionals to simplify the fundamentals of writing. Additionally, past award-winning works, along with encouraging messages from previous winners, are shared to create a welcoming environment for first-time participants.

Last year's 13th contest drew 2,216 submissions (1,146 paintings and 1,070 essays) and resulted in prestigious awards, including two Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Awards and two Mirai Support Awards, along with 20 honorable mentions. Notably, the Minister’s Award for the painting category went to 9th grader Kotone Katakawa from Shizuoka Prefecture for her work titled "Threads of Love," while the essay award was given to 7th grader Ayano Yasuda from Kitakyushu, Fukuoka for her piece "Nasal Bonds," both reflecting strong familial themes rooted in personal experiences.
