The Significance of 'Ningbo in Light and Shadow' Exhibition in Madrid for Sino-Spanish Relations
Ningbo in Light and Shadow Exhibition in Madrid
On September 26, 2025, the 'Ningbo in Light and Shadow' special exhibition launched at the China Cultural Center in Madrid, marking a significant moment in the celebration of key anniversaries for China and Europe. As the year 2025 signifies both the 50th year of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union, and the 20th anniversary of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Spain and China, this exhibition stands as an emblem of cultural dialogue and diplomatic ties.
This exhibition has been organized by the Ningbo International Communication Center, drawing participation and support from the China Cultural Center in Madrid and the China National Tourism Office in Madrid. Notably, this is the exhibition's debut in Western Europe after traveling to 19 countries over its journey. Opening up under the theme 'Ningbo in Light and Shadow,' the exhibit is structured into four captivating chapters: 'Shared Beauty of China and Spain,' 'Happiness and Harmony,' 'Urban and Rural Charm,' and 'Dynamic Growth.' Each chapter features photographs accompanied by bilingual captions in both Chinese and Spanish, showcasing the cultural richness and development narrative of Ningbo, a prominent eastern port city that has successfully balanced its ancient heritage with modern advancement.
The grand inauguration retraced ceremonial procedures that witnessed the presence of dignitaries from various organizations, including the UN World Tourism Organization and the Chinese Embassy in Spain. The event was attended by over 100 guests representing diverse fields including governmental, cultural, and business sectors.
Through the lens of artistic photography, the exhibition narratively unfolds Ningbo's vast history of international interactions, positioning it as a model of fostering connections that stretch far beyond transaction-based exchanges, to nurturing spiritual dialogues between East and West. The images capture the essence of Ningbo—one that resonates with its title meaning 'a peaceful sea with calm waves' and reflects the vibrancy of its international engagements.
Since its initial launch in Cambodia in May 2024, the exhibition has made waves, captivating nearly 460,000 visitors and receiving laudatory feedback. Among those praising the initiative, the Cambodian Prime Minister's social media channels celebrated how the exhibition showcased Ningbo's exceptional allure to audiences worldwide. The Chinese Embassy's resonance with Ningbo's presentation revealed a country eager to promote its cultural narratives while further engaging with Spain and other international communities.
In further remarks, Marcel Leijzar, Deputy Director of the Department of International Development and Cooperation at the UN World Tourism Organization, articulated, "Ningbo's history, framed through light, shadow, and photographic expression, symbolizes China’s openness and stands as a testament to the city’s global journey."
As the 'Ningbo in Light and Shadow' exhibition continues to capture the imaginations of audiences, it embodies a broader vision important to strengthening cross-cultural partnerships and fostering understanding during a pivotal time for Sino-Spanish relations. This cultural endeavor not only represents Ningbo's urban evolution but also sows seeds for future engagements grounded in mutual respect and shared growth, making it an invaluable addition to the landscape of global cultural diplomacy today.
