University of Phoenix Executive Discusses Digital Learning Strategies at WCET Annual Conference

Advancing Digital Learning Strategies

At the recent WCET Annual Conference, Kelly Hermann, the Vice President of Accessibility and Student Affairs at the University of Phoenix, took the stage to share invaluable insights on digital learning practices. Underlining the vital importance of inclusivity in education, Hermann delivered two sessions that emphasized the need for higher education institutions to adopt robust strategies that foster equitable access to digital learning for all students.

Focused on Accessibility

The WICHE Cooperative for Educational Technologies (WCET) organized the three-day conference, held from October 14-16, to address pressing challenges and breakthroughs in digital learning within the higher education sector. Hermann co-led a preconference workshop titled "Making Accessibility Defensible: What to Document and Why," which explored how institutions can effectively support students with disabilities in digital environments.

During this workshop, attendees engaged in discussions revolving around sustainable practices and governance that ensure consistent support for accessibility. Participants shared common documentation practices such as Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates (VPATs), procurement records, and institutional policies that bolster accessibility initiatives. Hermann emphasized that incorporating these essential documents into the instructional design process is crucial for establishing a dependable framework that supports all learners.

"Accessibility is an ongoing commitment that requires institutions to pair sustainable practices with collaboration across academic, instructional design, and technology teams," Hermann stated.

Cross-Functional Collaboration Insights

In conjunction with her focus on governance, Hermann also co-facilitated a session titled "Accessibility Lessons Learned and Experiences Shared," which highlighted real-life examples of successful cross-functional teamwork in supporting accessibility initiatives. This session provided a platform for participants to share personal experiences, delve into regional challenges, and strategize collective methods to enhance accessibility across digital content.

The conversations that flowed from this session were pivotal. Attendees gleaned insights from each other about the hurdles faced in implementing accessibility initiatives, ultimately fostering an atmosphere of shared learning and collaboration among higher education institutions.

Commitment to Equitable Learning Experiences

The strategies presented by Hermann underscore a broader movement within higher education aimed at refining practices that guarantee equitable access to educational resources, digital environments, and student services. Through her expertise, Hermann conveyed actionable approaches for institutions striving for governance, collaboration, and continual improvements that positively impact learner experiences.
