Segway Honored with HKQAA Award for Sustainable Innovation in Mobility Solutions
Segway Honored with HKQAA Award for Sustainable Innovation
Segway, a global leader in mobility solutions, has recently been awarded the Green and Sustainable Innovation and Technology Award by the Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency (HKQAA) in recognition of its outstanding contributions to sustainability and clean energy practices. This prestigious award was presented on December 17th, during the HKQAA Innovation and Technology Forum for a Green and Livable City, held at the Hong Kong Science Park.
This accolade highlights Segway’s continuous commitment to sustainability, particularly through the eco-design principles embodied in its shared electric scooters, like the Apex D110 and Max S90L models. In recent years, Segway has expanded its commitment to sustainability by launching eco-friendly products, maintaining responsible supply chains, and prioritizing clean energy production. This proactive approach met the rising demands of urban areas, operators, and end-users worldwide for cleaner and more transparent mobility options.
Commitment to Sustainable Product Design
Segway has woven sustainability into the design and production of its products long before industry standards accelerated towards such initiatives. Beginning in 2023, the Max S90L received the industry's first Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), while three additional Segway vehicles, including the D110, also received LCA recognition. This method is internationally recognized for evaluating a product's total environmental impact, from raw materials to end-of-life, demonstrating the company's dedication to globally aligned sustainability standards and traceable environmental metrics.
Furthermore, tangible progress in sustainability is evident in Segway's proactive adoption of recycled materials. Since 2021, Segway has led efforts to incorporate recycled materials into its shared electric scooters. This commitment is showcased in specific models. The Apex D110, Max Plus X, and Max S90L scooters include approximately 36.5%, 31.84%, and 30.16% recycled content, respectively (excluding batteries) in 2025. With these models deployed globally, Segway proves that sustainable design is not only certification-ready but also market-tested, delivering excellence in both environmental and operational aspects.
Eco-Friendly Production Powered by Sustainable Energy
At the top of Segway’s manufacturing line, the company has implemented a solar energy system that provides clean energy for on-site consumption and supplies excess energy back to the grid. After a year of consistent growth in renewable electricity usage, over 65% of the facility's energy came from eco-friendly sources between June and August 2025.
This initiative extends beyond Segway's internal operations; the excess clean electricity directly benefits the local community. By supplying the regional grid with surplus energy, Segway makes a measurable contribution quantifiable through Green Energy Certificates (GEC), one for every 1,000 kWh supplied. A total of 143 GEC were generated between June and December.
Zack Yan, Deputy General Manager of Segway’s Commercial Mobility Division, emphasized, “The integration of green energy in our production processes and feeding the national grid with surplus energy not only validates our environmental responsibility but reflects how shared micromobility fits into the larger picture.” He added, “By supplying clean energy to the national system, we support the nation’s energy transition and demonstrate that micromobility constitutes more than just a means of transport; it is pivotal in building smart cities and low-carbon environments aligned with national and international goals.”
Building a Sustainable Supply Chain Ecosystem
Sustainability in production is never the effort of a single entity; it relies on a comprehensive and environmentally responsible supply chain. For Segway, integrating eco-friendly principles begins at the early stages of production by aligning all supply chain partners to common sustainability objectives.
An important initiative in this collaboration is the company's Annual Supply Chain Convention, where Segway and its partners drive sustainable innovation and enhance product efficiency across the board. Beyond the annual convention, Segway has implemented a robust supply chain management and evaluation system to reinforce the requirements for supply chain partners. A key component of this system is a specific incentive mechanism for sustainability integrated into the annual supplier audit process. This mechanism motivates partners to continually deepen their efforts and innovations in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) dimensions.
With the HKQAA award serving as new validation, Segway reaffirms its mission to lead the industry towards a cleaner, more responsible future. By combining sustainable design, clean energy production, and a deeply committed supplier ecosystem, the company is demonstrating that low-carbon mobility is scalable, reliable, and ready for global adoption. Segway will continue to push the boundaries of what sustainable micromobility can achieve.
