Seaspan Enhances Fleet Operations with Comprehensive Upgrade Initiative

Seaspan's Commitment to Modernizing Fleet Operations

Seaspan Corporation, based in Vancouver, has recently issued an update on its ambitious SAVER (Seaspan Action on Vessel Energy Reduction) program, which began in 2013. This initiative represents a pioneering effort in the realm of maritime efficiency and sustainability, predating many industry regulations that now enforce decarbonization.

Driving Efficiency and Sustainability

At the core of Seaspan’s operations is an Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework, coupled with a thorough decarbonization strategy. The company has been undertaking an extensive series of vessel retrofits and upgrades, collaborating closely with its customers to enhance vessel performance while simultaneously lowering the environmental footprint. These retrofits are seen as a practical approach to extending the life of vessels and improving operational efficiency.

As of now, Seaspan has completed an impressive 552 upgrades across its fleet and has plans for an additional 85 projects. These enhancements cover a broad spectrum of improvements targeted at various efficiency aspects, including electrical systems, thermodynamic and hydrodynamic efficiency, alongside broader retrofitting efforts. To date, 86 vessels have undergone these upgrades, with 10 more scheduled for future enhancements, including the conversion of main engines to methanol, expected to be ready by mid-2026.

Financial Investment and Strategic Focus

The total investment in these projects has reached approximately USD 226.5 million, combining both completed and planned initiatives. Leveraging a fully integrated vessel lifecycle management platform that encompasses all phases from design to recycling, Seaspan classifies its SAVER upgrade program into three main categories:

1. Fuel-Saving Efficiency Enhancements
- Renewal of Propeller Cap Fins
- Bulbous Bow Modification
- Main Engine Derating
- Energy Recovery Systems

2. Cargo Capacity Optimization
- Lashing Bridge Elevation and Extension
- Stack Weight Increase
- Lashing Pattern Enhancements
- CSA Loading Computer Upgrades
- Reefer Expansion

3. Green Fuel Emission Reduction
- Fuel Conversion Retrofits
- Scrubber Installation
- Shore Power/AMP-System Upgrades

These advancements not only decrease fuel consumption and increase cargo load but also provide customers with enhanced operational flexibility, keeping them competitive in a rapidly evolving market.

Commitment to Decarbonization

Bing Chen, the President and CEO of Seaspan Corporation, emphasized the significance of these enhancements by stating, "Fleet enhancement is a core pillar of our decarbonization strategy. By modernizing our fleet in partnership with our clients, we are not only boosting operational performance but also contributing positively to a sustainable shipping industry." These projects exemplify how Seaspan's strong partnerships and commitment to innovation synergize toward achieving common goals.

As the maritime industry progresses towards its decarbonization targets, Seaspan is dedicated to utilizing comprehensive, cutting-edge solutions and digital tools to upgrade its existing fleet assets. The company's ongoing efforts reinforce their leadership position at the cutting edge of global maritime operations, steering towards smarter and cleaner practices.
