AARP Maryland Hosts Community Breakfast to Honor Social Security's 90 Years of Service

AARP Maryland Celebrates Social Security's 90th Anniversary

This year marks a significant milestone as Social Security turns 90. AARP Maryland is gearing up to celebrate this remarkable anniversary with a community event on August 14, 2025. The gathering will take place at the Dough Roller in Ocean City, from 8 to 10 a.m. This event not only commemorates nine decades of Social Security but also emphasizes its vital role in supporting American citizens, particularly the over 1.1 million Marylanders who depend on it for their financial security.

The history of Social Security is a testament to a promise kept for generations of hardworking Americans. As Hank Greenberg, the State Director of AARP Maryland, remarks, “For nine decades, Social Security has delivered the earned payments that help 1.1 million Marylanders stay financially secure.” This event will spotlight the importance of preserving Social Security for future generations, and attendees will engage in meaningful discussions on how to protect this crucial service.

The AARP Maryland breakfast will feature an array of activities, ensuring a memorable experience for all who attend. Here’s what participants can expect:
  • - AARP Update: Attendees will receive insights into AARP’s ongoing advocacy efforts to uphold Social Security for current beneficiaries and future generations alike.

This celebration isn't merely a recognition of achievements; it's also a call to action. Social Security plays an integral role in the lives of many, including nearly 827,000 retirees, over 106,000 disabled workers, and approximately 75,000 recipients of spousal/survivor benefits in Maryland. Additionally, around 58,000 children in the state receive benefits, indicating the extensive reach of this program.

As part of the broader initiative to engage communities and promote awareness, AARP is inviting members, local officials, and citizens to come together in supporting the protection of Social Security as it continues to provide not just retirement income but a promise to every American who has contributed to the system.

Tony Trenkle, a retired federal executive and member of the AARP Maryland Executive Council, stated, “Social Security isn't just a retirement plan—it's a promise to every American who pays into it.” AARP Maryland’s breakfast aims to celebrate the success of Social Security and reinforce the commitment to ensure its viability for future generations.
