Global Unity Enhances Education Cannot Wait's Fundraising Goals Amidst Ongoing Crises

On November 5, 2026, a significant gathering took place in Geneva, Switzerland, where governments and organizations united to make substantial pledges towards the Education Cannot Wait (ECW) campaign. The meeting, known as the High-Level Replenishment Conference, revealed an impressive total of US$405.8 million in new financial commitments. This considerable infusion of funding has brought ECW closer to its ambitious fundraising goal of US$600 million, which aims to support quality education for millions of children affected by crises around the world.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of ECW's mission, which emphasizes that no child should be deprived of education, irrespective of their circumstances. As a result of the latest fundraising efforts, ECW has now secured a total of US$541.6 million toward its goal, representing a strong 90% of its target. In addition to new pledges announced at the conference, the figure includes US$135.8 million that was already secured through multi-year commitments from various donors.

At the heart of the conference was a palpable sense of solidarity, as nations such as Germany, the United Kingdom, Norway, Canada, Switzerland, Ireland, the European Union, and Japan all stepped forward to reaffirm their commitment to support children encountering hardship due to conflicts, displacement, and climate crises. These collective efforts not only send a powerful message but also reinforce the shared belief that the vulnerabilities faced by these children must be met with actionable support from the global community.

In her remarks, Sigrid Kaag, the Chair of ECW's High-Level Steering Group, emphasized the fundamental right to education. She stated, "Education is a fundamental human right, even in times of conflict, displacement, and disaster. Today’s commitments are a powerful demonstration of international solidarity and a renewal of the promise we made ten years ago that children caught in crises will not be left behind. That promise must now translate into action."

The event was pivotal in shaping the future direction of ECW. The commitments made by world leaders signify a renewed dedication to ensuring that children's education, particularly in crisis-affected regions, receives adequate attention and resources. Ambassador Dominik Stillhart, Co-Chair of ECW's Executive Committee, echoed these sentiments, stating that education should never be set aside, even amid crises.

This global conference was not merely a ceremonial gathering; it also laid the groundwork for ECW's strategic plan from 2027 to 2030, which has the ambitious target of reaching 10 million children - with a focus on including girls and children with disabilities. Despite past successes, which have included impacting over 16 million children, the challenges remain formidable. An estimated 258 million school-aged children are currently affected by various crises worldwide, underscoring the need for urgent and ongoing international support.

The conference also served as a platform for exploring innovative financing mechanisms for education in emergencies. New partnership initiatives with organizations like the International Finance Facility for Education and the Education Bridging Fund were proposed to foster deeper investments into educational frameworks. This approach aims to supplement traditional funding methods by leveraging development finance and private sector involvement.

Other high-level discussions also highlighted the necessity for national leadership in education systems to efficiently integrate refugee and displaced children, along with the demand for more predictable funding. This represents a shift toward sustainable and autonomous community-level educational solutions.

Maysa Jalbout, the Director of ECW, expressed gratitude for the financial pledges but reminded all stakeholders that success should not just be measured in dollars raised, but in the tangible difference made in children's lives. "Today, our partners have given us more than financial commitments; they have entrusted us with a responsibility to make a real impact on education for children facing crises," she stated. Looking ahead, ECW has outlined three key priorities: ensuring quality learning, strengthening local leadership in education, and expanding the coalition of financing partners.

The road ahead for ECW is promising but demands sustained engagement and innovative solutions. With a strong coalition and innovative strategies, the Fund is committed to transforming the pledges made in Geneva into actionable outcomes that will truly benefit the children in need. In doing so, ECW aims not only to meet its funding targets but also to ensure that no child is left waiting for their right to education amidst ongoing crises.
