A New Way of Learning Through Filmmaking
In a groundbreaking initiative, Furetabi, a children's travel program operated by Meiko Network Japan, teamed up with AOI Pro., a production company specializing in advertising films, to organize a unique educational trip for Doshisha Junior High School students in Nagasaki. This program, named "Tori Tabi in Nagasaki," took place from August 4 to 6, 2025, and aimed at transforming traditional school trips into active learning experiences.
Furetabi is not just another travel program; it emphasizes experiential learning that shapes students through direct engagement in activities. The collaboration with AOI Pro. introduced the project "Let’s Capture the Local Charm on Film! - Tori Tabi," showcasing how film production can be combined with education to provide a richer learning experience. The initiative focuses on promoting deep, active learning, aligning with current educational demands for programs that go beyond mere sightseeing.
Prior to embarking on the journey, students received instruction from AOI Pro. experts, covering the basics of camera operation and film structure. The adventure commenced with visits to iconic historical sites in Nagasaki, such as the Oura Church, Meganebashi Bridge, the Glass Beach, and Dejima. The students even captured breathtaking recordings from Inasa-yama, which is renowned for being one of Japan's three great night views, and enjoyed a cruise around the famous Gunkanjima, or Battleship Island, for unique filming opportunities.
Following their time in Nagasaki, the students returned to Kyoto where they edited their footage under the guidance of AOI Pro. instructors. This hands-on experience allowed them to take part in every stage of the filmmaking process, including planning, negotiation for interviews, filming, and editing. Ultimately, they produced promotional videos showcasing the local charm of Nagasaki.
The principal feature of this program is its focus on learning through the lens of personal perspective rather than merely circling tourist spots. As students creatively decided how to frame their subjects for filming, they deepened their understanding of the historical and cultural context while also nurturing a sense of accomplishment and self-worth through the filming and editing processes. Feedback from the participants reflected their satisfaction with the experience, sharing thoughts like, "I participated in a trip for the first time without my family, and it was an incredibly fulfilling experience," and "I learned new techniques while enjoying filming and editing, activities I had previously found daunting."
By the end of the program, students had not only developed filmmaking skills but also enhanced their non-cognitive abilities and communication skills. This comprehensive approach highlights how education can effectively intertwine creativity and personal development.
Building on the success of this program, Furetabi is eager to expand its offerings to institutions considering educational travel, including private schools and corporate entities. By providing transformative experiences that are memorable learning ventures rather than ordinary sightseeing tours, Furetabi aims to unlock each student’s potential while stimulating valuable interactions within local communities and businesses. With an ongoing commitment to innovative educational travel formats, Furetabi continues to contribute to social structures that foster proactive learning and empower students to thrive in their futures.
