The American Public University System (APUS), based in Charles Town, West Virginia, is making significant strides in the realm of academic research by fostering groundbreaking projects and multidisciplinary collaborations across the globe. In 2024, APUS secured funding for 19 innovative research projects, with 12 based domestically and seven delving into international domains across North America, Europe, and Asia. Recent Research Highlights
1. Dr. Daniel Diaz - Listen to Our Voices
Dr. Diaz's ethnographic research explores the cultural and linguistic wealth of Nahuatl-speaking communities in Mexico. His work aims to create educational materials that help preserve Indigenous languages and promote inclusivity through effective communication.
2. Dr. Kelly Chinners Reiss and Dr. Daniela Messina - WaterTAP
This project concentrates on drinking water quality and public health, distributing over 700 water testing kits to communities. Recognized by the Association of Advancing Participatory Sciences, WaterTAP empowers students to harness science and data to address daily health concerns within their communities.
3. Dr. Melissa Schnyder - Native Fishpond Restoration in Hawaii
Dr. Schnyder’s innovative research investigates Indigenous food sovereignty by restoring traditional Hawaiian fishponds. This project highlights sustainable practices and ecological stewardship rooted in cultural heritage, aiming to create sustainable food systems that respect environments and traditions.
4. APUS Analog Research Group (AARG)
Established in 2020 under the guidance of faculty advisor Dr. Kristen Miller, this student-led group has successfully completed several notable missions, including its fifth analog project at the Inflatable Lunar and Martian Analog Habitat (ILMAH). Their recent studies focus on plant growth in extraterrestrial-like environments, testing communication systems, and studying human factors like fatigue experienced during such analog missions.
5. COVID-19 Research in Kodiak, Alaska
Led by Dr. Kristin Drexler, Dr. Michelle Watts, and graduate student Anthony Caole, this research explores unique experiences of Indigenous communities in Kodiak during the COVID-19 pandemic. The project documents the impacts and community responses, providing valuable insights into public health dynamics during challenging times.
