Hunt Slonem Creates His First Donkey Painting for Charity Auction

Hunt Slonem Paints His First Donkey

In a remarkable artistic feat, Hunt Slonem, a celebrated Neo-Expressionist painter, has turned his talents to the animal kingdom by creating his very first painting of a donkey. Commissioned by Oscar's Place, a dedicated donkey sanctuary in Northern California, this unique piece signifies both Slonem's artistic versatility and his commitment to animal welfare.

The painting, which will be unveiled on June 1 and then auctioned online, is intended to support the rescue and care of donkeys at the sanctuary, frequently featured on ABC's Donkey King. Measuring 20 by 16 inches, the oil on panel work reflects Slonem's signature vibrant colors and textured style that has captivated art collectors and enthusiasts alike for over four decades.

A Personal Connection

Oscar's Place, founded by Ron King and Phil Selway, has been a long-time supporter of the arts, with Selway running Hamilton-Selway Fine Art, one of the leading pop and contemporary art galleries on the West Coast. Selway, who has a personal admiration for Slonem's work, explains that this collaboration springs from their shared love of nature and the joy it brings. “I have long been a fan of Hunt Slonem and his work. His magical use of color and texture creates a sense of wonder and warmth,” Selway stated, emphasizing the synergy between art and animal welfare.

Hunt Slonem’s artistic journey began in 1977 with his first solo show, and since then he has held over 350 exhibitions worldwide. His distinctive style, characterized by whimsical depictions of bunnies, butterflies, and tropical birds, has earned him a prestigious place in the collections of more than 250 museums globally, including notable institutions such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Inspiration Behind the Art

For this new piece, Slonem drew inspiration from Viejo, a beloved donkey at Oscar's Place who has been a companion to Ron King. “It was a challenge to paint a donkey, but I've always loved them, and this was my first attempt. I incorporate animals in my work as a way of connecting with the natural world,” Slonem shared, reflecting on the creative process that brought this particular painting to life.

The auction for the artwork will run through June 27, coinciding with a live telethon event broadcast from the sanctuary barn. All proceeds from the auction will be directed towards the rescue, rehabilitation, and lifelong care of the sanctuary’s donkeys, highlighting the crucial need for support in animal welfare initiatives.

Supporting a Worthy Cause

Oscar's Place is a 501(c)(3) accredited donkey rescue, currently caring for over 220 donkeys across their ranches in Northern California. The sanctuary not only provides a safe haven for these animals but also offers a sense of community and education through the Donkey King reality series. This series showcases the daily lives of the donkeys and the dedicated team behind the sanctuary, effectively increasing awareness and encouraging public involvement in animal rescue efforts.

As for Slonem, this initiative marks a new chapter in his artistic evolution, and a notable addition to his already impressive portfolio. Collectors and animal lovers alike are anticipated to show their support for this auction, which not only celebrates art but also uplifts the mission of Oscar's Place.

Hunt Slonem’s foray into donkey painting not only enriches his artistic repertoire but also serves as a heartfelt testament to the enduring bond between humans and animals. Those interested can place their bids through the online auction at Oscar's Place Auction as they contribute to a cause that seeks to nurture and care for some of the most vulnerable creatures in our society.
