LIG Defense and Rheinmetall Forge Strategic Alliance for NATO Defense Upgrades

LIG Defense&Aerospace and Rheinmetall Join Forces for NATO's Defense

In a significant move to bolster defense systems for European and NATO allies, LIG Defense&Aerospace (LIG D&A), a leading South Korean defense technology company, has partnered with Rheinmetall, the German technology group headquartered in Düsseldorf. Announced during the Eurosatory defense exhibition, this strategic partnership is poised to provide state-of-the-art air defense systems designed to meet the evolving needs of Europe and its NATO member states.

Establishing a Joint Venture

The immediate goal of this collaboration is the establishment of a joint venture, in which Rheinmetall will hold the majority stake. This alliance is not just a conventional partnership; it aims to fuse the expertise of both companies to develop, localize, and introduce advanced medium and long-range air defense missile systems (MRAD/LRAD) into the European market. These systems will be closely integrated with Rheinmetall's very short-range air defense systems (VSHORAD), creating a robust and comprehensive defense network.

Addressing Market Needs

Both companies have recognized existing gaps in the short-range air defense (SHORAD) segment. Therefore, they have agreed to collaboratively develop new missiles and capabilities that will enhance their offerings in this vital area. The partnership aims to deliver comprehensive, turnkey solutions from a single source, significantly improving the product portfolios of both companies.

Recent geopolitical conflicts, notably in Ukraine and the Middle East, have underscored the necessity for agile and reliable supply chains and logistics. LIG D&A and Rheinmetall bring extensive knowledge and capabilities to the table, meeting the rising demand for multilayered air defense systems, missiles, and ammunition in today's complex security landscape.

Strategic Insights

Oliver Dürr, CEO of Rheinmetall's Air Defence division, highlighted that the collaboration offers highly complementary ground air defense systems intended to address contemporary market demands as well as future challenges. By pooling strengths, LIG D&A and Rheinmetall aim to establish a center of excellence in missile defense systems and other defense solutions within Europe.

Ickhyun Shin, President and CEO of LIG D&A, expressed confidence in the partnership, stating, "This is the perfect moment to deepen our collaboration with a trusted European partner like Rheinmetall and build a long-term strategic presence in Europe. We will offer competitive and interoperable solutions that contribute to the integrated defense capabilities of Europe against aerial and missile threats."
