The 2026 Survey on Awareness of Declining Birth Rates Reveals Economic Concerns as A Key Factor

In a recent survey titled the "2026 Survey on Awareness of Declining Birth Rates," conducted by Job Research Institute, a subsidiary of Persol Career Co., 450 working men and women expressed their thoughts on rising economic concerns impacting family planning decisions. The survey reveals a disheartening gap between the childhood dreams of many participants and the harsh realities of parenthood amid Japan's ongoing low birth rates. The findings highlight a staggering 78.9% of respondents feeling that realizing their ideal number of children is "difficult," with the overwhelming majority attributing their fears to rising living costs.

Ideal vs. Reality of Parenthood

When participants were asked to denote their ideal number of children, 44.7% responded with "two," which was the most common answer. However, the reality paints a starkly different picture, emphasizing that 35.3% believe they can realistically raise only "one" child. This disparity presents a troubling notion of how economic conditions weigh on personal desires — with only a fraction willing to aim for their ideal due to worries about sustenance and future financial security. Consequently, when it comes to decision-making about family size, economic circumstances overshadow personal values, with 71.2% of respondents prioritizing financial stability over preferences.

Economic Pressures

Examining the responses, 69% of participants indicated that increasing living costs are a major concern, further complicating the decision to expand their families. Additionally, factors such as the high costs of education (59.7%) and uncertainties surrounding future incomes (54.1%) fuel the anxieties surrounding parenthood. Furthermore, when asked about their feelings regarding the declining birth rate, 69.8% identified the issue as personal, recognizing its potential repercussions on the country’s economy and the future of their children.

Pessimism Over Improvement

The survey pointed out that 78.7% of participants do not see any light at the end of the tunnel regarding the improvement of Japan's declining birth rate. Those who feel a lack of optimism cited an increase in unmarried and late marriages (55.4%) and continuous price hikes (54%) as reasons for their pessimism. These statistics underline a societal concern that runs deeper than just a preference for family size; it reflects a comprehensive economic fear that inhibits many from pursuing their aspirations for parenthood.

Needed Improvements

Moreover, participants articulated their opinions on measures needed to address the birthrate reduction, overwhelmingly advocating for wage increases (65.8%) and stabilizing living costs (50%). It is abundantly clear that for many, the journey toward parenthood is laden with unnecessary obstacles stemming from financial insecurities. Many respondents expressed skepticism about the current state of Japan as a child-rearing environment, with a staggering 68.7% rejecting the notion that it is conducive to raising children comfortably.

In conclusion, the findings released by Job Research Institute reveal not only the struggles facing many in deciding to have children but also illustrate the urgent need for structural changes in the economy that would allow individuals to feel secure in their family planning decisions. As companies continue to grapple with workforce shortages, Investing in sustainable childcare options, enhancing wages, and advocating for economic stability become paramount to infusing hope into the future of Japan's declining birth rate.
