Engaging Children in Sustainable Rice Education and Onigiri Making in Yamanashi

Engaging Children in Onigiri Making and Rice Education

On July 29, 2026, a unique event will take place at the Kai Center in Yamanashi, where children and their guardians can engage in a hands-on rice education experience. The event, organized by the Pal System Yamanashi Nagano Cooperative, aims to educate participants about the journey of rice production while allowing them to unleash their creativity in making their own delicious onigiri.

A Hands-On Learning Experience

From 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, attendees will dive into the world of rice farming. They will learn about the sustainable agricultural practices behind the Pal System's direct-sourced rice, which is cultivated with environmental conservation in mind. A representative from the cooperative’s rice department will conduct an online presentation explaining the year-long process that rice undergoes before it reaches consumers' tables. Participants will also enjoy rice-related quizzes that shed light on the significance of rice and the hardworking farmers behind this staple food.

Create Your Own Onigiri

After learning about rice, kids will take part in the exciting task of creating their bespoke onigiri. With a variety of ingredients available — including salmon, pickled plum, dried sardines, and meatballs — children will have the freedom to select their preferred fillings. They can choose between shaping their onigiri into traditional triangles, round shapes, or the unique tarawara form, making it a fun and imaginative culinary experience. The event will also feature a 'My Onigiri' wrapping station where participants can personalize their creations with their style.

Supportive volunteers known as the ‘Kai Center Supporters’ will assist throughout the process, ensuring children feel engaged and excited. As a sweet treat, specially crafted desserts made from rice flour will be provided, emphasizing the full appreciation of rice's culinary versatility.

An Educational Opportunity for Summer Research

This event presents an excellent opportunity for children to explore topics for their summer research projects. By documenting their onigiri-making process and the insights gained from the rice education segment, kids can compile their findings to submit as a school project, making learning delightful and fulfilling.

The Pal System Initiative: Promoting Rice Consumption

The event is part of the larger initiative by the Pal System Group, named ‘Onigiri Good,’ launched in April 2026. This campaign encourages rice consumption to boost Japan's food self-sufficiency rates. Contributions are tracked through participant activities, aiming to reach a total of 10,000 actions, leading to a donation of one ton of direct-sourced rice to children's cafeterias across 12 prefectures in Japan.

By partaking in the event, attendees will not only enjoy their handmade onigiri but also contribute to the promotion of sustainable rice use within the community, fostering a sense of social responsibility and awareness.

In summary, the Kai Center’s onigiri-making event promises to be a fun, educational, and impactful experience. It combines culinary creativity with environmental education, inspiring the next generation to appreciate and engage with their food sources while supporting local agriculture.

Pal System Yamanashi Nagano remains committed to supporting sustainable agriculture, empowering consumers, and nurturing a community focused on a sustainable future.
