Harada Sangyo Achieves SBT Certification for GHG Emission Reductions

Harada Sangyo Co., Ltd., based in Osaka, Japan, has recently announced that it has obtained certification for its greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This recognition confirms that the targets set by Harada Sangyo are scientifically credible and ambitious, fully aligned with the requirements of the Paris Agreement.

GHG Emission Reduction Goals

As part of its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility, Harada Sangyo has outlined clear GHG emission reduction objectives through 2030. Here are the specific targets:

  • - Scope 1 and 2: An ambitious target of a 42% reduction based on the year 2022, aiming for completion by 2030.
  • - Scope 3: A goal to achieve a 25% reduction by 2030, also based on the 2022 level.

Understanding Scope

  • - Scope 1: Direct GHG emissions from owned or controlled sources.
  • - Scope 2: Indirect GHG emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, steam, heating, and cooling consumed by the reporting company.
  • - Scope 3: All other indirect emissions that occur in a company’s value chain.

Strategies for Achieving Targets

To meet these targets, Harada Sangyo plans to implement various sustainability initiatives throughout its supply chain. These initiatives include:
  • - Reducing energy and resource consumption in office operations.
  • - Expanding the use of low-carbon transportation services.
  • - Developing and selling reusable products.
  • - Supporting the recycling of its products, encouraging suppliers to use renewable energy, and promoting the utilization of biomass materials.

Commitment to Sustainability

As Harada Sangyo celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2023, it continues to be a global trading company that provides a diverse array of products and services to multiple industries, including shipbuilding, construction, healthcare, nursing care, food, and electronics. The company recognizes that addressing social issues is fundamental to its existence as a corporate entity. With this in mind, it has launched comprehensive sustainability activities throughout the entire organization since 2020, which include starting the calculation of the Carbon Footprint of Products (CFP).

The certification from SBTi was spearheaded by the Sustainability Promotion Project, which includes a certified Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) expert, to visualize GHG emissions at both domestic and international business sites and to formulate these ambitious targets.

Insights from the Sustainability Promotion Project

Junji Sawada, Executive Officer of the Sustainability Promotion Project, shared his thoughts: "We view the formal recognition of our scientifically-based targets as a starting point. As a trading company, we cannot achieve these targets alone; collaboration with suppliers and partners is essential. Our slogan 'Everything Starts with a Challenge' encapsulates our desire to remain a company that leads change alongside our stakeholders."

With this commitment, Harada Sangyo is poised to make significant strides in reducing GHG emissions and promoting sustainability throughout its operations and the broader community.
