Power Diamond Systems Achieves Breakthrough with Diamond MOSFET-Based DC/DC Converter Demonstration

Groundbreaking Achievement in Power Electronics

Power Diamond Systems, Inc., based in Tokyo, Japan, has reached a significant milestone in the field of power electronics with the successful demonstration of a non-synchronous buck converter utilizing diamond MOSFET technology. This achievement is noteworthy as it represents the first experimental validation of actual power conversion using a diamond MOSFET worldwide, confirming its capability for continuous switching operation—an essential requirement for advanced power electronics applications.

Significance of Diamond MOSFETs

Diamond exhibits remarkable properties: a wide bandgap, a high critical electric field breakdown capability, and exceptional thermal conduction. These attributes make diamond a highly desirable material for developing next-generation power devices. If diamond-based power devices can be practically deployed, they would enable the creation of compact, low-loss power converters. This development promises a substantial enhancement in power density and energy efficiency across various applications, particularly in power electronics systems.

While prior studies indicated that diamond MOSFETs could facilitate rapid switching, the demonstration of their suitability for continuous switching functionality remained a challenge. The integral step to achieving practical applications was to incorporate diamond MOSFETs into real power conversion circuits and confirm stable operation.

Research and Development Output

The current study involved designing and fabricating a non-synchronous buck converter that integrates diamond MOSFETs, allowing for the continuous switching operation to be evaluated. This transition from standalone device assessment to assessing integration into applicable power conversion circuits was crucial to confirming the practical viability of diamond MOSFET technology.

The results were promising: the team successfully observed variations in output voltage correlating with duty cycles in the developed DC/DC converter. This experiment marked the world's first proof of power conversion using diamond MOSFETs. Moreover, the successful implementation of stable converter operation demonstrated the diamond MOSFET's ability to sustain continuous switching operations, an indispensable feature for effective power electronics.

Future Directions

Building on these findings, Power Diamond Systems plans to accelerate the real-world applications of diamond MOSFETs. By merging device characteristics with evaluations on circuit and system levels, the company aims to expedite the practical development of diamond-based technology in the next-generation power electronics landscape.

The research findings will be publicly presented at the IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition (APEC 2026) in San Antonio, Texas, from March 22 to 26, 2026. This poster presentation has been recognized as a standout submission, selected for the Dialogue Preview Session, which only includes around 8% of overall presentations, due to its high quality and widespread interest.

This work has been partially supported by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). These collaborations emphasize the importance of ongoing research and development into advanced semiconductor technologies.
