Yoshikei Group and Asahi Beverages Promote Carbon Neutrality with CO2-Eating Vending Machines

Introduction

In a significant step towards a carbon-neutral society, Yoshikei Group and Asahi Beverages have joined forces to introduce innovative vending machines designed to absorb carbon dioxide (CO2). This initiative, titled "CO2-Eating Vending Machines," marks a groundbreaking venture in Japan, aligning with the global push for sustainability and environmental conservation.

What Are CO2-Eating Vending Machines?

Launched as part of a pilot project in June 2023, the CO2-eating vending machines developed by Asahi Beverages operate on the innovative concept of creating "forests in urban areas." The machines are expected to become fully operational in 2024, with an ambitious goal to install 50,000 units by 2030. Each machine is projected to absorb up to 60 kilograms of CO2 annually, equivalent to the carbon sequestration of about 20 cedar trees (aged between 56 to 60 years).

These vending machines incorporate patented technology (Patent No. 7282338) that allows for the absorption of CO2 from the atmosphere, representing a pioneering approach in Japan’s efforts to combat climate change.

Utilization of Captured CO2

After collecting CO2, Asahi Beverages plans to collaborate with municipalities and companies that support this environmental initiative. The captured CO2 will be transformed into various industrial raw materials. Potential applications include mixing CO2 into asphalt and concrete, thereby aiding in carbon fixation. Additionally, the initiative aims to support the creation of underwater forests through blue carbon ecosystems, enhancing marine biodiversity.

Reducing Environmental Impact Through Vending Machines

Yoshikei Group is already taking steps to minimize environmental impact. They provide complimentary secure delivery boxes (Anshin Box) to customers, effectively reducing the need for redeliveries. This initiative has contributed to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions through the use of approximately 4,700 delivery vehicles. The collaboration with Asahi Beverages to promote the CO2 recycling model further enhances the commitment of both companies toward achieving a carbon-neutral society.

In recognition of these efforts, Yoshikei Group received the Environmental Minister's Award at the COOL CHOICE LEADERS AWARD 2018 for its zero-redelivery initiative.

Yoshikei Group: A Pioneer in Meal Kit Delivery Services

For nearly 50 years, Yoshikei Group has been at the forefront of the meal kit delivery industry, adapting to changes in consumer lifestyles and supporting family meals across Japan. In 2019, they were honored with the highest award at the "COOL CHOICE LEADERS AWARD 2018," and they have consistently ranked first in the food delivery revenue rankings published by the Japan Distribution Industry Newspaper.

Their commitment to sustainable practices is further validated by multiple awards, including the 32nd Food Safety and Environmental Contribution Award in 2023, recognizing their environmentally friendly service offerings. Moreover, Yoshikei was honored with the "Mothers Selection Award 2023" for being a convenient and useful service for childcare families in Japan.

In December 2024, the company was awarded the Chairperson's Prize at the 12th "Food Industry Mottainai Awards" for its longstanding contribution to reducing food waste.

Yoshikei Group remains dedicated to delivering safety, quality, and a delightful dining experience, aspiring to create enjoyable family meals and brighter homes throughout Japan.
