Waseda University's Curriculum Overhaul for 2027

Waseda University, located in Shinjuku, Tokyo, is set to implement a comprehensive curriculum reform in its Faculty of Political Science and Economics starting from the 2027 academic year. Introduction of Mandatory English Courses

To strengthen English proficiency among students, Waseda University will introduce mandatory courses taught in English across all degree programs. Previously, the English-based Degree Program (EDP) allowed students to graduate entirely in English since its introduction in September 2010; however, starting in 2027, students enrolled in the Japanese-based Degree Program (JDP) will also be required to take EDP courses. One of the distinctive mandatory courses will be titled 'Introduction to Political Economics (tentative)', where JDP and EDP students will engage in discussions and presentations using English.

Enhancing Data Analysis Skills

Recognizing the growing importance of mathematical thinking and statistical techniques in social sciences such as political science and economics, Waseda University will also enhance its data analysis curriculum. From the 2021 academic year, the university mandated that all new entrants take mathematics standardized tests, 'Mathematics I and Mathematics A,' emphasizing the need for a solid mathematical foundation. The upcoming curriculum will introduce a 'Mathematics Program (tentative)' featuring advanced courses in calculus, linear algebra, and probability theory. This program aims to equip students with cutting-edge data analysis skills. Concurrently, the mandatory course 'Introduction to Data Analysis (tentative)' will be introduced in both JDP and EDP programs to underline the practical application of data analysis in political science and economics.

Revising Course Structure

In an effort to promote self-directed learning and enhance educational outcomes, Waseda University will review and reorganize the structure of mandatory and elective courses. This includes a significant redesign of seminar courses to create a more engaging and participatory environment for students.
