The Alarming Findings of the Kemira Water Index 2025
In a world increasingly affected by climate change, access to clean water remains a fundamental concern. Recently, Kemira released its
Water Index 2025, a comprehensive international study that identifies areas most vulnerable to water shortages due to extreme weather events. The index reveals critical deficiencies in water resilience and highlights a troubling lack of consumer preparedness.
Based on insights from over 14,000 respondents in ten European countries and ten U.S. states, the study shows that a staggering
91% of participants are worried about extreme weather events impacting their communities. Notably,
85% believe their regions need to strengthen efforts to prepare for flooding, while
84% think more should be done to prepare for future droughts. However, only
5% of respondents reported having a detailed water emergency supply plan, illustrating a significant gap in readiness.
Regional Concerns and Preparedness
Data from the Kemira Water Index indicates that both
Americans and Europeans are alarmed by potential threats to their water supply. Many have personally experienced water-related issues, such as flooding (
20%), drought (
16%), or complete water supply failure (
12%). The perception of local water resources being in jeopardy is prevalent, raising questions about the adequacy of government and utility measures to safeguard communities against such crises.
Ranking Water Resilience
The index ranks European countries and U.S. states based on water resilience. The top performers in Europe included
Norway,
Sweden, and the
United Kingdom, while
California,
Minnesota, and
Michigan led in the U.S. Each ranking is derived from a detailed analysis of
21 key metrics across
300 data sources, providing a clear picture of where water sources are most secure.
Kemira’s Executive Vice President, Tuija Pohjolainen-Hiltunen, emphasized that there is a stark need for better public education on local water resource protection, substantial investment in water infrastructure, and government action to prepare for future challenges.
The Role of Government and Consumer Responsibility
Governments play a pivotal role in establishing safety standards, regulations, and promoting awareness campaigns. Despite alarming concerns regarding water-related risks, household preparedness appears surprisingly low. Only
7% of U.S. respondents and
4% of Europeans claim to have a detailed water supply plan. Almost half believe that government initiatives aimed at preparing for floods and droughts require significant improvement.
Interestingly, while
77% of respondents on both continents advocate for stricter regulations on industrial water usage, there is a clear division regarding water efficiency standards for household appliances. While
69% of Europeans favor such initiatives, the majority of Americans (66%) express opposition to them.
Consumer Insights on Water Management
The study also highlights how water usage and management behaviors are heavily influenced by cultural factors. While
91% of those surveyed stated they practice water conservation measures at home, only
26% of Americans trust tap water as their primary drinking source, contrasting sharply with the
70% of Europeans who prefer tap water. Despite these differing views on drinking water, both groups exhibit a willingness to adopt water-saving habits, such as turning off taps while brushing teeth or taking shorter showers.
Looking Ahead: Collaborative Efforts Required
The Kemira Water Index 2025 serves as a wake-up call for all stakeholders – residents, businesses, and government officials. To combat the imminent threat of climate change on water availability, it is crucial that all parties work collaboratively to enhance water resilience. This includes investing in advanced technology, updating infrastructure, and educating consumers about the wider implications of water usage.
In a world where uncertainties about water sources are growing, the findings of the Kemira Water Index exemplify the urgent necessity to act collectively to ensure everyone has reliable access to clean, safe water. For more information on the Kemira Water Index 2025, visit
