His educational background includes a bachelor's degree in food science from Purdue University, underpinning his technical expertise in the food safety and quality domain.

Jeremiah Johnson, Carlson's successor, first joined Hormel Foods in 2005. His initial role was that of a quality and process control supervisor, where he began to cultivate his career within the organization. His ascension to various roles, including corporate manager for regulatory, compliance, and HACCP, has equipped him with extensive knowledge needed to lead Hormel's food safety management efforts.
