In November 2022, Tokyo unveiled its startup strategy, "Global Innovation with STARTUPS," aimed at integrating the local ecosystem with the global market. Among its various initiatives, the establishment of
SusHi Tech Tokyo has created a global platform that nurtures innovation focused on achieving sustainable cities through advanced technology. Following the successful launch of this initiative, the next step is the introduction of
SusHi Tech Global.
What is SusHi Tech Global?
SusHi Tech Global is a significant project that seeks to empower startups with the potential to drive social change through sustainable technology. The initiative focuses on forming a network of 100 to 150 startup companies, collectively known as
SusHi Tech Global Startups. These startups will undergo thorough support with an aim to scale up their operations on a global level, involving a comprehensive approach that integrates public and private sector resources.
The program will introduce tailored support programs based on individual challenges related to human resources, organizational structure, business strategies, and capital acquisition.
Support for Promising Startups
The most promising startups within the
SusHi Tech Global Startups cohort will benefit from a
Growth Acceleration Program. This program encompasses financial support and customized assistance designed to help these startups navigate their unique challenges.
By collaborating with a diverse array of supporters, the initiative aims to deliver effective backing that leverages each partner's strengths and networks. Invitations for discussions with stakeholders will continue as the initiative evolves, ensuring that support measures remain relevant and impactful.
Criteria for Joining SusHi Tech Global Startups
Startups that meet specific criteria can join the
SusHi Tech Global Startups group. These startups will be evaluated by external experts based on nominations from references. Here are the primary requirements:
1. Must possess a concrete product based on technology that contributes to a sustainable society.
2. Either must have proven experience in global expansion or exhibit a strong intention to do so.
3. Must have completed funding rounds within the last three years, with total raised capital exceeding 2 billion yen.
4. If unable to meet the criteria in point 3, they must either:
- Raise a minimum of 200 million yen from foreign VC/CVC or equivalent institutions,
- Obtain grants specifically for deep-tech startups, with a minimum award amount of 100 million yen, or
- Be a university-originated startup anticipated to have notably high future growth potential.
- Additionally, a combination of loans and grants totaling at least 2 billion yen would qualify.
