Inaugural International MICE Summit Sets Course for Saudi Arabia's Event Industry Growth

Inaugural International MICE Summit in Saudi Arabia

The inaugural International MICE Summit (IMS24) is set to take place from December 15 to 17, 2024, at Mohammed Bin Salman Nonprofit City, Riyadh, with expectations of over 1,000 global leaders from the meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) sector in attendance. Hosted by the Saudi Conventions and Exhibitions General Authority (SCEGA), the three-day event will focus on the theme "Expanding Horizons," creating a platform for discussions on the future of the MICE industry.

Saudi Arabia has emerged as one of the fastest-growing G20 MICE markets, and this summit aims to bring together a diverse mix of cross-industry professionals, government leaders, and suppliers from around the globe. The summit's extensive program will include plenary sessions, panel discussions, and various opportunities for networking, collaboration, and knowledge sharing, all crucial for fostering innovation in the MICE sector.

Transforming the MICE Landscape

His Excellency Fahd Al-Rasheed, IMS host and Chairman of SCEGA, stated that during a time marked by significant technological and environmental shifts, the MICE industry has become a vital driver of change. He emphasized that IMS24 would address the demands of a globalized world, reimagining connections among people, cultures, and nations to foster prosperity.

With the upcoming World Expo 2030 expected to draw millions of visitors, the growth of Saudi Arabia's MICE market is forecasted to accelerate. This is due, in part, to strategic expansions in the transportation sector, with plans for a new airline and an increase in venue space by 1 million square meters. Additionally, the country aims to provide 854,000 hotel rooms by 2030, further accommodating the anticipated influx of visitors.

In 2023, the MICE sector saw a near 15 percent increase in events, hosting almost 17,000 functions that attracted over 20 million visitors. Tourism's contribution to the Saudi economy stood at 6 percent of GDP, totaling a significant 68 billion USD.

Future-Ready Initiatives

The proliferation of Giga-projects throughout the Kingdom aims to enhance visitor experiences and improve connectivity with other parts of the world. SCEGA has also announced a substantial 588 million SAR (USD 156 million) incentive program to support high-profile events scheduled for 2025, setting a robust foundation for the future of the MICE industry in Saudi Arabia.

The summit not only showcases Saudi Arabia's commitment to becoming a leading global tourism and events hub but also aligns with the Kingdom's broader transformation agenda. Over the years, the country has positioned itself as a vibrant and attractive destination for international events, making it an excellent host for the inaugural International MICE Summit.
