Saishunkan Pharmaceutical Co. Receives Logistics Environment Award for Modal Shift Innovation

Saishunkan Pharmaceutical Honored with Logistics Environment Award

Saishunkan Pharmaceutical Co., headquartered in Kumamoto, Japan, has recently received the Encouragement Award at the 26th Logistics Environment Awards, organized by the Japan Logistics Association. This recognition highlights the company's ongoing commitment to logistics reform, particularly through its collaborative modal shift efforts with three other companies: Sagawa Express, Nishiki Daitou Transportation Warehouse, and Japan Freight Railway Company.

Overview of the Initiative

This initiative aligns with Saishunkan's dedication to environmentally conscious management and addresses the pressing logistics issues anticipated in 2024. The multi-modal shift involved transitioning shipments from the Kumamoto factory to the Yokohama area. While transporting 10-ton truck cargo typically requires at least three 12-foot railway containers, innovative loading techniques allowed for successful transport with just two containers during trial runs.

What is Modal Shift?
Modal shift refers to the transition from traditional trucking for main transportation to more eco-friendly bulk transport modes such as trains and ships. This change is expected to significantly enhance transport efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and provide alternative routes during disasters.

Background of the Initiative

The logistics sector is currently grappling with critical challenges, including truck driver shortages, stricter labor regulations, and increasing environmental concerns. As a company that manages all aspects of its sales and production—including its flagship product, Domohoron Wrinkle—Saishunkan recognizes the need for sustainable logistics solutions that balance these societal challenges with the continuous delivery of high-quality products. Consequently, they opted for the modal shift cargo transport approach.

Given its limited experience in specialized logistics, Saishunkan understood that they could not handle this modal shift alone. They collaborated with the three partner companies to establish clear definitions, rules, and practical switching methods for cargo transport from trucks to trains.

Collaboration Among Four Companies

The project harnessed the expertise of each company involved, establishing a new logistics model through close cooperation:
  • - Saishunkan Pharmaceutical: Oversaw quality control, logistics strategy, and project management.
  • - Sagawa Express: Coordinated transportation utilizing a nationwide logistics network.
  • - Japan Freight Railway Company: Provided railway transportation infrastructure and expertise in bulk transport.
  • - Nishiki Daitou Transportation Warehouse: Managed the transition between railway and ground transport with flexible delivery adjustments.

Achievements and Future Plans

Through monthly meetings to share results and challenges, the companies involved have successfully reduced CO₂ emissions amid their ongoing quest for improvement:
  • - CO₂ Emission Reduction: Achieved annual reduction in CO₂ emissions by 78% compared to traditional trucking methods, significantly contributing to environmental sustainability and the company’s SDGs efforts.
  • - Improved Transport Quality: Enhanced temperature management and decreased product damage risks, ensuring safer and more reliable deliveries for customers.
  • - Cost Savings: Expected savings in logistics costs amounting to several million yen annually, contributing to long-term profitability.

Looking ahead, Saishunkan plans not only to continue its current initiatives but also to expand this sustainable logistics model nationwide. Approaching its 100th anniversary in 2032, Saishunkan aims to define a new vision with its
