Fostering a Thriving F5.5G Optical Network Industry Amid AI Advancements

The F5.5G All-Optical Industry Summit took place during the MWC Shanghai 2025, marking a significant event for the optical network sector. Various key players such as the Committee on Communication Technology of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Chinese Academy of Information and Communications Technology, and major operators like China Telecom, China Mobile, and China Unicom participated in this landmark summit. The focal point of discussions revolved around the rapid development of the F5.5G industry.

This summit highlighted the commercial deployment of F5.5G optical networks, with over 70 operators worldwide launching 10 Gbps optical service packages. The widespread commercialization of these 10 Gbps broadband optical networks has paved the way for innovative services, underlining a global initiative. Notably, more than 240 optical networks have been established globally with a bandwidth of 400 Gb/s. Excitingly, the industry is now working towards creating metropolitan networks that promise a latency of just 1 millisecond, facilitating instant access to computational power in the cloud and fostering innovation in data handling.

As artificial intelligence increasingly influences global digital economies, production processes, and daily life, operators are integrating AI technology more ambitively into their offerings. Industry pioneers are moving beyond the traditional connectivity service provider model, embracing comprehensive offerings that combine connectivity, cloud services, and applications with AI. During the summit, Li Peng, Senior Vice President of Huawei and President of ICT Sales & Service, emphasized that the strategic transformation of operators in AI applications holds significant potential for residential and enterprise uses.

Huawei aims to collaborate with the industry to advance F5.5G optical networks. The company's goal is to enhance collaboration between cloud infrastructure, AI platforms, networks, and devices while promoting broader adoption of AI in households and industries. In the era of AI, the key to expanding operators' broadband services lies in delivering new value to users, convincing them of the quality and affordability of these advanced solutions.

To build user trust in broadband services, Bob Chen, responsible for Huawei's optical product line, discussed the company's latest innovations in four key dimensions. He stated that Huawei is consistently innovating to help operators craft valuable offerings that combine various services, hence enhancing user experiences with new solutions that stand out as distinctly superior. The enhancements include improvements to broadband capacity and diversity, alongside new terminal offerings that supply users with a wide range of applications.

One of the noteworthy offerings is the 50G PON, which allows for the transition to ultra-gigabit solutions and 10 Gbps technologies. Moreover, Huawei continues to bolster end-to-end encryption capabilities, ensuring premium users enjoy secure access to diverse services. Another highlight is the AI Home Hub, a new terminal that serves as the control center for intelligent home features driven by AI interactions.

Furthermore, Huawei, in partnership with operators, is focused on constructing metropolitan optical networks that maintain a latency of 1 ms, which aims to provide seamless access to cloud computing powers and AI applications through low-latency deterministic networks. The continual elevation of technological capabilities plays a central role in not only advancing network infrastructure but also in making strides toward comprehensive adoption of AI in everyday life, particularly in home and enterprise solutions.

At the core of this summit and the ongoing efforts in the F5.5G industry is a commitment to innovation that ensures optical networks are not just tools for connection but gateways to a future enriched with artificial intelligence, thus paving the way for expansive growth in the AI age.
