Bunraku Performance at Theater 1010 in Kitasenju
This May, the National Theatre is proud to present its third Bunraku performance at Kitasenju’s Theater 1010. This venue is quickly becoming a beloved spot for traditional Japanese art forms, providing audiences with an opportunity to experience authentic Bunraku at a reasonable price and within a shortened format.
The performances will take place in three parts. The first two segments will showcase historical tales from Japan, starting with "Ashiya Doman Ouchi Kagami," which explores the legendary birth of Abe no Seimei, a distinguished Onmyoji from the Heian era, through the lens of familial love. Following that, we will witness "Yoshitsune Senbonzakura," a powerful narrative depicting the tragic downfall of the Heike clan during the Genpei War. Audiences can expect a dynamic showcase with rich storytelling and emotive performances.
In the third part, we’ll introduce "Bunraku Masterpieces Introduction," where audiences can delve into the world of Bunraku through a curated selection that highlights the tragic tale of Shunkan, known from The Tale of Heike. This segment will allow first-time viewers and seasoned fans alike to appreciate the beauty of this traditional form.
Furthermore, a special note goes to the story of "Ashiya Doman Ouchi Kagami." Originally staged in 1734, this drama tells the story of Abe no Seimei, believed to be born from an otherworldly union between a white fox and his father, Abe no Yasuna. This tale is rich in cultural folklore and intricacies, highlighting complex characters whose destinies interweave through love and tragedy.
Another highlight is the dramatization of the famous story "Yoshitsune Senbonzakura," showcasing the struggles of Yoshitsune as he flees from his enemies following the bitter conflict between the Genji and Heike clans. This production will feature stunning visual elements, including stylized motions and dramatic confrontations.
The evening promises a sensory feast with stunning puppet performance, traditional music accompaniment, and narrations that will draw everyone into the historical landscape of Japan.
