Aspiring to Serve: A Resounding Success for the Military Heroes Golf Classic
The PenFed Foundation for Military Heroes, dedicated to supporting veterans in their journey from military service to civilian success, recently achieved a significant milestone by raising over
$1 million during the 22nd annual Military Heroes Golf Classic. This remarkable event took place on September 8, 2025, and showcased not only fundraising success but also the collective gratitude toward American veterans.
In a heartfelt statement, James Schenck, the President and CEO of PenFed Credit Union and the PenFed Foundation, reiterated the impact of this ongoing effort: "For over 248 years, the brave service members of America's Armed Forces have fought 12 wars to defend our freedom. The success of our tournament enables us to continue taking care of our nation's veterans. At PenFed, we never forget."
The golf tournament kicked off with a moving tribute to the victims of the
9/11 attacks, honoring not just those who lost their lives but also the brave service members who fought to protect the nation in the wake of such tragedy.
Andrea McCarren, President of the PenFed Foundation, expressed her excitement over the fundraising achievement, stating, "We are thrilled to have raised over $1 million at the Military Heroes Golf Classic this year and look forward to continuing to support our military heroes who have made profound sacrifices for our nation." The collective efforts of dedicated volunteers and generous donors have seen the foundation provide financial support of over
$55 million to more than
150,000 military families since its inception.
This year’s event also featured several inspiring speakers who shared their experiences demonstrating extraordinary resilience and courage. One of the key speakers was
U.S. Army Captain Mary Kolars, who served as a Female Engagement Team Leader in Afghanistan. Her work involved supervising the training of the Afghan Female Tactical Platoon, showcasing the essential roles women can and do play in the armed forces.
Nick Grillo, a combat veteran of
Operation Enduring Freedom, spoke about his entrepreneurial journey as the owner of Elevate Vending. He shared insights derived from his experience in the PenFed Foundation Veteran Entrepreneur Program.
Adding to the impressive speaker lineup was
Steven Wheatcroft, a former professional golfer who now champions mental health services for athletes through his organization,
The Mulligan Foundation. He highlighted the importance of mental health support, particularly for those transitioning from high-intensity careers such as professional sports or military service.
