The Birth of a New Legacy: Armor Craftsman Shoken Unveils First Collection

In a remarkable event for traditional Japanese craftsmanship, Kenichi Tanoue, the chairman of Marutake Industry Co., Ltd. based in Satsumasendai, Kagoshima, has embraced a new title as armor craftsman Shoken. This announcement coincides with the unveiling of his inaugural collection, reflecting a commitment to both heritage and innovation.

Shoken embodies the age-old spirit of “Shishi So Sho,” which emphasizes the importance of learning, inheriting, and evolving. His new name carries a profound intention to pass on the techniques and philosophies that his mentors imparted to him, ensuring that the cultural treasures of Japan are preserved and nurtured for future generations.

To honor this commitment, Shoken has crafted three special pieces of armor, which were completed following a ceremonial prayer at the revered Nitta Shrine, a significant site within the Satsuma region. These armors not only serve as protective gear but also as powerful symbols of his vow to honor the tradition of armor-making.

Shoken's Artistry in Armor Making

Shoken's creations exemplify a new frontier in armor artistry, merging centuries-old techniques with a contemporary aesthetic. His work showcases a refined balance of traditional craftsmanship and modern design sensibilities. Attention to structure, color, and material has led to a distinctive style that radiates both strength and tranquility.

Rather than merely replicating the past, Shoken believes that true beauty lies in breathing new life into traditional forms. His philosophy emphasizes the importance of innovation as a key component of preservation—a principle that is vividly manifested in his latest armor works.

The upcoming major exhibition from November 20 to 21, 2025, titled “Kei,” marks Shoken’s first official showcase. The exhibition will feature over 30 pieces, including Shoken’s own creations and famous samurai armors from the Marutake workshop.

Shoken's Vision for the Future

Shoken comments, “This exhibition goes beyond mere artwork; it aims to challenge the diminishing ‘spirit of craftsmanship’ in our nation. It serves as a bridge for the younger generation, inspiring them to reconnect with this essential aspect of our culture.”
