Wanhua Chemical's Pioneering Innovations for a Greener Future
Wanhua Chemical, a leading player in the chemical industry, has recently revealed a series of groundbreaking technologies and sustainable transformation models aimed at addressing the challenges of carbon emissions and promoting environmental sustainability. These innovations were showcased during the COP29 conference held in Azerbaijan from November 11th to 22nd, 2024, under the theme of "Solidarity for a Green World."

One of the key highlights was the introduction of the world’s first integrated intelligent thermal energy technology. This innovative approach utilizes waste heat to enhance energy efficiency and significantly reduce carbon emissions. Through advanced systems, such as corrugated plate absorption heat pumps and mechanical vapor recompression, Wanhua's Hehai Comprehensive Energy Project has successfully reclaimed waste heat from Yantai Industrial Park. This reclaimed thermal energy is not only utilized for production processes but also serves as a clean heating source for the city of Yantai during winter months.
By effectively tapping into low-temperature waste heat, Wanhua is making strides towards sustainable development within the chemical industry. In just one year, the project managed to provide heating for over 10 million square meters of residential areas, reducing coal dependency by 2.6 million tons annually and heating a staggering 64 million square meters.
In addition to energy efficiency, Wanhua has also focused on recycling innovations that target emission reductions. Its advanced diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) technology utilizes wastewater recycling systems to handle high-concentration amine waste brine effectively. This process not only minimizes brine emissions by 3 million tons but also slashes carbon emissions by 140,000 tons each year. Furthermore, by implementing a pioneering hydrogen chloride (HCl) oxidation cycle technology, Wanhua is able to convert HCl into high-purity chlorine for the MDI production process, reducing electricity consumption significantly.
Promoting full-cycle material recycling also sits at the heart of Wanhua’s innovations. Despite existing recycling methods for materials like polycarbonate and thermoplastic polyurethane, the majority of plastic waste remains unrecyclable. Wanhua’s breakthrough alcoholysis technology facilitates polyurethane foam recycling, recovering up to 30% of polyol without affecting product quality. With leading global brands showing interest in this innovation, Wanhua is on the front lines of sustainable material practices.
