Volta Labs and New England Biolabs Collaborate to Enhance Automated NGS Library Preparation

New Development in Genomics Automation

In a significant step for genomic research, Volta Labs, a prominent name in automation technology for genomics, has announced a collaboration with New England Biolabs (NEB), a leader in life science reagents. This partnership is aimed at expanding the scope of reagents available for the Callisto Sample Preparation Platform, particularly in the field of Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS).

The partnership leverages Volta's advanced automated systems alongside NEB's acclaimed NEBNext® NGS sample preparation kits. This integration is set to enhance the reproducibility of genomic workflows, enabling laboratories to achieve greater reliability and efficiency in their operations. Udayan Umapathi, CEO of Volta Labs, expressed enthusiasm regarding the collaboration: “Our partnership with NEB enhances Callisto’s mission to make advanced sequencing technology more accessible and reliable. Utilizing NEB's high-quality reagents allows laboratories to conduct Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) workflows in a fully automated manner with ease.”

Key Features of the Partnership

The co-development initiative will initially focus on the NEBNext® Ultra™ II FS DNA Library Prep Kit, designed specifically for Illumina sequencing. The workflow will be fully automated, integrating NEB's reagents seamlessly with Callisto’s digital fluidics platform. This will allow researchers and clinical laboratories to perform library preparations that yield high quality and high yield with minimal manual intervention.

Benefits of the Callisto Platform

  • - Consistency: Every batch will provide highly uniform fragment sizes and cleaner libraries, crucial for precise sequencing.
  • - Speed: Laboratories can set up the system in under thirty minutes and enjoy an extensive three hours of walk-away time, enhancing operational efficiency.
  • - Flexibility: The workflows are pre-validated for multiple sequencing systems, accommodating the diverse needs of genomic research.

Andrew Barry from NEB remarked, “Integrating our reagents into an innovative platform like Callisto shows how NEB can provide robust, high-fidelity NGS workflows, meeting the demands of modern genomics labs.” This innovation underscores a broader approach of the Callisto platform—its philosophy of
