Record-Breaking Athlete Fernanda Maciel Triumphs in Salar de Uyuni
Fernanda Maciel's Historic Achievement at Salar de Uyuni
Brazilian athlete Fernanda Maciel, representing Red Bull, has made history by establishing a new record for the fastest known time (FKT) at Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia, the largest salt flat in the world. On September 28, 2026, Maciel completed the challenging 172.8 kilometers route between Llica and Uyuni in an impressive time of 19 hours, 50 minutes, and 8 seconds. This remarkable achievement eclipsed the previous record by over 13 hours, showcasing her extraordinary endurance and skill.
The Journey Begins
Maciel began her adventure at 5:00 AM on September 28, under the iconic archway in Llica. This starting point is located at an altitude of approximately 3,700 meters above sea level, close to the height of Mount Fuji. At this elevation, each breath provides about 35% less oxygen than at sea level, making the task even more demanding. The route also featured an elevation gain of around 311 meters, adding to the physical toll of the run.
Following the same path as the former record holder, Valmor Giuseppe Leonardo, who set the record in 2023, Maciel faced challenging conditions caused by recent hailstorms that left parts of the salt flat submerged and muddy. By the time she reached the 145-kilometer mark, she had to navigate through various puddles, prompting her to stop and change her shoes and socks.
Overcoming Challenges
As she crossed the 100-kilometer milestone, Maciel encountered gastrointestinal issues that made it difficult for her to eat. She explained, "I had to adjust my pace to find a rhythm that felt comfortable for running 170 kilometers in such high altitude dessert."
After 16 hours and 45 minutes of running, she finally reached the final stretch, which was approximately 27 kilometers on a road, completing it at an average pace of about 10 km/h. She reached the iconic Uyuni Cathedral at precisely 12:50 AM on September 29, 2026, marking the end of her incredible journey.
Recognizing the Achievement
Fernanda Maciel's record at Salar de Uyuni adds to her extensive list of FKTs. Formerly an environmental attorney and now a resident of Chamonix, France, Maciel holds impressive records for female climbers across five of the Seven Summits, including Aconcagua, Kilimanjaro, Elbrus, Mount Vinson, and Carstensz Pyramid. She has also achieved speed records on Grand Paradiso and the Ice Field Circuit in Patagonia. Her ongoing project includes the remaining peaks, Denali and Mount Everest, which she's set her sights on.
This latest achievement has not only established Maciel as a prominent athlete but also symbolizes the human spirit's ability to conquer extreme conditions. Her journey serves as an inspiration for many aspiring athletes worldwide, proving that with determination and resilience, incredible feats are possible, even in the most challenging environments.
