Opening of Gold & Glory Exhibition Restores Legend Charlie Wiggins to Motorsport History

A Historic Exhibition Celebrating Charlie Wiggins

The LeMay – America’s Car Museum, located in Tacoma, Washington, is proud to announce the grand opening of a momentous exhibition entitled For Gold & Glory on September 19, 2026. This exhibition is poised to bring national recognition to Charlie Wiggins, an extraordinary figure in American racing history, whose achievements have been remarkably overlooked. Wiggins was not just a talented driver, but also a brilliant mechanic and innovator who excelled under challenging circumstances.

The highlight of this exhibition will be the original Wiggins Special, the unique race car that Wiggins built and drove to four Gold & Glory Sweepstakes championships. This significant vehicle has been rediscovered and will be displayed for the first time in over 90 years. The exhibition seeks to illustrate not only Wiggins' incredible talent but also the systemic barriers faced by Black racers during a segregated era in America.

Ed Welburn, former Vice President of Global Design at General Motors, will guest curate this exhibition. Welburn has dedicated himself to championing Wiggins' legacy, securing the appropriate means to share his story with the depth it rightfully deserves.
