AVAIO Digital Launches New AI-Ready Data Center in Algete, Spain

AVAIO Digital Expands to Spain with New AI Data Center

In a significant development for the tech landscape in Spain, AVAIO Digital has successfully announced the launch of its first data center in the town of Algete, located within the Community of Madrid. This strategic move aligns with the growth of Madrid's burgeoning digital sector, reinforcing the country’s position as a key player in the European technology market.

The new facility, known as the Algete Data Hub, encompasses a major investment of €650 million, poised to support the rapidly expanding tech industry in the region. It is expected to create over 500 jobs during its construction phase and approximately 50 permanent positions once operational. By harnessing Madrid’s vast professional labor pool, AVAIO aims to provide substantial workforce development opportunities, fostering local economic growth.

Mark McComiskey, CEO of AVAIO Digital, highlighted the significance of this milestone, stating, "Madrid is the leading European hub for cloud computing and AI development. Our partnership with the City of Algete represents a substantial investment aimed at bolstering digital infrastructure and energy capabilities in the region."

The Algete Data Hub will be built as a hyperscale data center called AVAIO Digital Scorpio, featuring a flexible design tailored to suit both cloud computing and AI applications. The project has secured the critical initial 8 MW of clean power through an interconnection agreement with Iberdrola, Spain's foremost electrical generation and transmission company. This capacity will expand significantly, with plans to provide 56.3 MW of power by 2028, ensuring a sustainable and reliable energy source for the facility.

In addition to its clean energy initiatives, the data center is designed to offer low-latency connectivity to Madrid’s primary data center clusters located in Alcobendas and Alcala, as well as to the national fiber network. This infrastructure will facilitate direct links to significant data center markets across Spain, mainland Europe, and international locations through various subsea cable landing points.

AVAIODigital's commitment to sustainability is reflected not only in its energy choices but also in its architectural design. The facility, set in a well-buffered area away from residential zones, will utilize features like rainwater capture systems, rooftop solar installations, and a water-efficient air-cooling system. This focus on intelligent and sustainable design exemplifies the company's ethos and contributes to achieving environmentally responsible development.

Pedro Blanco, Project Manager for AVAIO Digital in Spain, remarked, "This venture solidifies Madrid's position as a vital data center axis and Algete’s emerging status as a data center hub. Our sustainable design principles will rejuvenate an outdated industrial site with minimal environmental impact, and we are thrilled to reach this important development stage."

The AVAIO Digital Scorpio project is a significant addition to AVAIO Digital’s expanding portfolio, which includes hyperscale facilities across the United States and Western Europe. With over 2 GW of power secured from various utilities, AVAIO is dedicated to sustainable practices, innovative designs, and ramping up capacity, aiming for nearly 450 MW available by 2027.

In summary, the establishment of the Algete Data Hub represents a pivotal development for both AVAIO Digital and the tech ecosystem in Spain, promoting growth, job creation, and a robust infrastructure for the digital future.
