Upcoming Youth Winter Sports Exchange in Hokkaido
The Japan Sports Association (JSPO), founded to foster sports participation and excellence, is excited to announce the second Japan-Korea-China Youth Winter Sports Exchange. This event is scheduled to take place in Hokkaido from February 23 to 28, 2026. This marks the first time Japan will host this significant gathering that focuses on enhancing winter sports experiences among middle school students from Japan, South Korea, and China.
Overview of the Exchange Program
The inaugural exchange took place in January 2025 in South Korea and saw youth from the three nations come together to engage in various winter sports. Following the success of the first event, the second exchange aims to create a platform where young athletes can share experiences and learn from one another, promoting not only competitive spirit but also intercultural understanding.
However, there have been recent developments regarding the participation of the Chinese delegation. As of January 29, 2026, the Chinese National Sports General Administration communicated that their athletes, coaches, and support staff would be dedicating all efforts toward preparing for the upcoming Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. Due to this commitment, they will not be able to participate in the exchange. While this news is disappointing for the event's organizers, including the Korean Sports Association and the Hokkaido Sports Association, they respect the decision and have planned accordingly.
Importance of the Exchange
Despite the absence of the Chinese team, the event remains vital for fostering friendship and collaboration between Japan and South Korea. It will continue as the second installment of this valuable exchange, emphasizing the importance of winter sports engagement for young athletes. The discussions among various stakeholders, including government bodies like the Sports Agency, have confirmed a strong commitment to move forward with the program.
