DuPont Recognizes Leaders in Sustainable Healthcare Packaging with Awards

DuPont Highlights Sustainable Innovation in Healthcare Packaging

DuPont recently announced the winners of the Tyvek® Sustainable Healthcare Packaging Awards during the Medical Packaging Conference (MPC) held in Boston from September 30 to October 2, 2026. Established to promote sustainability in healthcare packaging, this awards program recognizes companies making significant strides in utilizing Tyvek® material to foster eco-friendly practices throughout the packaging lifecycle.

The third edition of these awards honored three notable winners from the healthcare industry, each demonstrating a commitment to sustainability across different award categories:

1. Packaging (Re)Design: Plastic Ingenuity won for creating a new ready-to-use (RTU) tub and lid platform made from recycled PuraForm™ 134 polyester. This innovation offers a sustainable alternative to traditional injection-molded polystyrene. By integrating Tyvek® into the design, the product reduces plastic consumption by 15%, preventing the emission of 217 metric tons of CO2e for every million units produced. This approach not only enhances recyclability but also minimizes the release of particulates into the environment.

2. Operational Efficiencies: Coligroup Spa won for their innovative redesign of traditional suture packaging. Their solution eliminates an entire layer of packaging while maintaining complete sterility. By employing an aluminum inner pouch paired with a Tyvek® strip, the gas used for sterilization can penetrate the package effectively without requiring an additional outer layer. This strategy results in a remarkable 35% reduction in material usage, labor costs, and sterilization expenses, showcasing a significant leap towards greater operational efficiency.

3. Sustainability In-Use: Nelipak Healthcare Packaging achieved recognition for their Ecovate™ headerbags—a revolutionary all-polyethylene laminate that combines mono-axially oriented polyethylene (MOPE) with Tyvek® featuring Renewable Attribution. By replacing common mixed-material laminates in the ready-to-fill/use (RTF/U) market, this mono-material solution is certified recyclable and can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 40% when factoring in recycling at the end of its lifecycle. This move signifies advancements towards a more circular economy in healthcare packaging.

Lesley Aulick, the global business director of DuPont™ Tyvek® Roll Goods, remarked, “This year's winners exemplify that progress in sustainable healthcare packaging stems from thoughtful design, operational advancements, and scalable innovations.” She emphasized DuPont's commitment to continue supporting such initiatives, reducing environmental impacts, and ensuring the safe transport of medical products.

The Tyvek® Sustainable Healthcare Packaging Awards align with DuPont's broader strategy of advocating for sustainability within the healthcare supply chain, with applications for the next round expected to open in 2027. The awards program invites participation from various stakeholders, including manufacturers of medical devices, pharmaceutical companies, and healthcare facilities focused on sustainable packaging solutions using Tyvek® material.

As a global leader in innovation, DuPont serves as a catalyst for transformation across critical industries, including healthcare, emphasizing advanced solutions that improve day-to-day life. With a rich history of fostering innovation, the company aims to sustain its momentum in developing eco-friendly solutions that also promote patient safety.
