Age Safe® America Revives Its Home Safety Advisor Program for Seniors

Age Safe® America Revives Its Home Safety Advisor Program

Age Safe® America has made a significant stride in elder care with the relaunch of its Aging in Place Home Safety Advisor™ program. With over 64.6 million Americans aged 65 and older, there's a growing urgency for reliable home safety solutions. The updated program equips individuals from various backgrounds with essential training, tools, and a comprehensive business guide tailored for conducting in-home safety assessments.

Participants in this program earn the Aging in Place Home Safety Advisor certification, an essential credential developed from the previously established Senior Home Safety Specialist® (SHSS) certification, available since 2015. The latest relaunch not only modernizes educational content but also introduces a fully digital learning experience with an enhanced online business course that guides participants through the essentials of launching their own safety advisory service.

Program Details

The revamped program encompasses 15 self-paced modules, requiring four to five hours in total. It covers everything from performing a thorough home assessment to pricing strategies, marketing, and a 90-day launch plan for their advisory business. Each adviser receives access to the Advisor Field Kit, which includes customizable documents ready for use with clients, alongside lifetime access to the Advisor Portal, a hub for training and resources. For those seeking extra support, one-on-one coaching is available from co-founder Fritzi Gros-Daillon, an expert author and consultant in home safety.

As reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, unintentional falls have been a considerable issue for older adults, accounting for 41,400 deaths in 2023 alone. Recognizing the need for improved home safety measures, Age Safe America’s program aims to prevent such tragic outcomes by equipping trained advisors to implement safety audits. The Age Safe app, included with the SHSS certification, facilitates the completion of a 240-point in-home assessment, resulting in an Age Safe Home Score™, which reflects the home's safety level on a scale of 0 to 100.

Expanding Opportunities

There is no specific clinical background needed to enroll in the program. The advisory positions are open to various professionals, including those transitioning careers, contractors, handymen, real estate agents, and healthcare providers like nurses and occupational therapists. Each participant plays a crucial role in ensuring that older adults can remain in their homes independently while their families are assured of their safety.

As Dan Davenport, CEO of Age Safe America, states, “Older adults want to stay in their homes, and their families want to know those homes are safe.” He emphasizes the gap in trained professionals available to guide families through safety assessments, a gap that this program aims to fill effectively.

In addition to the training program, potential advisors can assess their own community's needs using the free Age Safe Market Score™ tool, which offers insights on older homeowners and local housing dynamics.
