Silicon Wafer Shipments Report Surge by 13.4% in Q3 2026 Amidst AI Demand Growth

Worldwide Shipment Surge of Silicon Wafers

In a recent report by the SEMI Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG), a significant uptick in global silicon wafer shipments was recorded for the third quarter (Q3) of 2026. The data reveals that shipments increased by an impressive 13.4% compared to the same quarter in the previous year, reaching a total of 3,756 million square inches (MSI). This marks a considerable rise from 3,313 MSI in Q3 2025. Furthermore, there was a quarter-over-quarter increase of 5.1% from the 3,573 MSI noted in Q2 of 2026.

Masatsugu Miura, the Chairman of SEMI SMG and General Manager of the Sales & Marketing Department at SUMCO Corporation, attributed this growth primarily to the robust demand stemming from artificial intelligence (AI) applications and a general improvement in industrial demand. Miura noted, “AI-related demand has consistently expanded beyond just advanced logic and memory. It now encompasses power devices and photonics as well.” He highlighted specific sectors contributing to this growth include robotics and AI server power supplies, which have driven a surge in general-purpose industrial semiconductor requirements.

The significance of silicon wafers cannot be overstated; they serve as the foundational material for most semiconductors integral to various electronic devices. These meticulously crafted disks possess diameters of up to 300 mm and are vital in semiconductor fabrication.

As AI technology continues its relentless ascent, the demand for silicon wafers is expected to similarly rise. Electronics companies are becoming increasingly reliant on sophisticated AI tools, promoting a shift towards advanced packaging and bonding applications for larger silicon wafers. The net effect has been a pronounced support for 300mm polished wafers in the market.

The SMG, part of the SEMI Electronic Materials Group (EMG), plays a pivotal role in gathering and analyzing data relevant to the silicon industry's health and growth. This analysis and the statistics collated are made possible through collaborative efforts among SEMI members engaged in various facets of silicon manufacturing, including polycrystalline and monocrystalline silicon.

The report not only emphasizes the current surge in silicon wafer shipments, but it also illustrates broader market trends aligning with the increasing dependency on technology driven by AI. As companies and manufacturers across the globe are challenged to upgrade and innovate, those involved in silicon production are positioned at the forefront of this evolution.

Emerging demands for innovative semiconductor applications highlight the critical nature of silicon wafers in the market, positioning manufacturers to meet this rapidly increasing need. As such, it is essential for stakeholders in the technology landscape to keep a pulse on these developments.

For ongoing updates and detailed statistics, industry professionals are encouraged to follow SEMI’s resources and stay connected through their various platforms. Their events, technology communities, and market intelligence resources are instrumental in fostering collaboration and championing innovation across the semiconductor supply chain, thereby enabling more secure and advanced electronic solutions.
