A New Wave of Experiential Art at Tokyo Bay Shiomi Prince Hotel
The Tokyo Bay Shiomi Prince Hotel now showcases a dynamic art installation called
Kitpas Window Art in its main lobby. Initiated by Nippon Rikagaku Kogyo Co., Ltd., this project adds a captivating visual experience for guests while promoting art's power to connect diverse communities.
This unique endeavor utilizes the hotel’s large glass windows as the canvas for artistic expression, transforming the lobby into a visual feast that enchants visitors from around the world. The work comes alive with lighting and window positioning, creating different atmospheres as the day progresses; what appears during the day changes dramatically at night.
Background of the Project
Founded in 1935, Nippon Rikagaku Kogyo has persistently focused on creating employment opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities while developing eco-friendly products. In 2005, they introduced
Kitpas, a water-soluble art medium that can be easily wiped off surfaces, including glass, which opens the door to new forms of artistry. Recently, there has been a growing interest in experiential art installations within commercial spaces. The
Kitpas Window Art at the hotel aims to capture the essence of this trend by connecting guests, local communities, and businesses through a unique art experience.
Future Developments
The project aims to create a BtoB and BtoBtoC model where collaborations between artists and commercial facilities or municipalities enhance both client branding and customer engagement. Not only will live painting events led by professional artists play a role in getting local audiences involved, but they will also add to the vibrancy of the hotel's offerings.
What is Kitpas?
Kitpas is a well-regarded brand of art supplies recognized globally for its innovative use across diverse settings. Originally aimed at children, it has now found a niche in professional artistry as well, thanks to its ability to create impactful artwork on smooth surfaces. The product underwent a major revision in 2021, now incorporating rice wax—a plant-based component that further enhances safety and usability. From schools to galleries, the versatility of Kitpas is paving the way for a new generation of artists.
In 2024,
Kitpas by ARTIST ecru received the Grand Prix at Japan Stationery Award among various accolades. This goes to show how the brand manages to merge creativity with functionality, providing tools for all age groups—including awards from iF Design Award and Kids Design Award in 2023.
