This year's event drew an impressive audience of 29,721 participants from 140 countries, all converging at the Gran Via venue under the central theme 'Urban Solutions for a Concrete Impact.' Here, attendees engaged deeply on critical topics such as affordable housing, climate change mitigation, and enhanced mobility.
Structured around seven focal points, the congress featured 668 international experts and representatives from over 1,000 cities. Notable speakers included prominent figures like Anne Hidalgo, André Dickens, Anacláudia Rossbach, Nikolas Badminton, and Ayumi Moore Aoki, who shared insights into their respective urban strategies and developments.
In conjunction with the Smart City Expo, the Tomorrow.Mobility World Congress was held, organized alongside various other significant gatherings like the HOWS Barcelona and Tomorrow.Blue Economy conferences, the Barcelona Deep Tech Summit, and the Barcelona Cybersecurity Congress. A total of 1,276 exhibitors showcased their innovations, featuring prominent companies such as Dell Technologies, Deutsche Telekom IoT, FCC Enviro, Google, and Microsoft.
Ugo Valenti, the director of the congress, stated, ‘Three days ago, we set out to demonstrate that smart city initiatives are already making a difference. With over 27,000 attendees and 1,276 exhibitors, along with the gathering of mayors, businesses, and experts achieving results worldwide, it's clear that cities are ready to scale up what works and we are positioned to assist in accelerating that process.’
In collaboration with the Barcelona City Council, the expo offered a program titled 'Program for Cities,' aimed at exchanging strategies and knowledge amongst municipal leaders. This initiative included meetings focused on housing challenges and matchmaking gatherings for urban planners.
A key highlight of the event was the awarding of the title 'Smart City of 2026' to Tokyo at the Global Smart City Awards ceremony. This prestigious recognition celebrates outstanding initiatives in urban transformation, with the Tokyo Digital Services Bureau winning for its 'C³ Powering Tokyo' initiative, which effectively centers residents in the city's digital and AI-driven transformation.
As the Smart City Expo World Congress concludes, it marks an important milestone in urban development dialogues. The event will return to the Gran Via in Barcelona for its sixteenth edition from November 2 to 4 in 2027, setting the stage for continued advancements in city innovations and sustainable urban living.
