CIEE Young Civic Leadership Summit Inspires Global Change in Myrtle Beach

CIEE Young Civic Leadership Summit: A Catalyst for Global Change

The 11th Annual Ambassador Johnny and Angie Young Civic Leadership Summit recently commenced at the Sheraton Myrtle Beach, showcasing the transformative journey of international college students participating in the BridgeUSA Summer Work Travel Program. Named in honor of the esteemed Ambassador Johnny and Mrs. Angie Young, the summit emphasizes their legacy of public service and cultural diplomacy.

This year's summit has brought together 50 exceptional young leaders from 29 different countries, enhancing the core mission of the U.S. Department of State's BridgeUSA program. The initiative provides international students with the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in American culture while working and creating lifelong connections. The goal is to promote understanding and friendships that transcend geographical borders.

Throughout the summit, the Fellows engaged in intensive leadership training aimed at fostering intercultural collaboration. They explored ways to make a positive impact in their communities and the world beyond. Participants also had the privilege of meeting influential figures, including Rebecca Pasini, the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Private Sector Exchange at the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Department of State.

In addition to personal development and networking, the Fellows actively contributed to the Myrtle Beach community through service projects. They chose to support local initiatives like Palmetto Works, The Shepherd's Table Community Kitchen and Pantry, and Keep Myrtle Beach Beautiful, further deepening their engagement with American society.

As they developed their leadership skills, these young changemakers from around the globe shared their diverse perspectives and experiences, enriching discussions and forming bonds that will extend well beyond the summit. The support from top sponsors, including Six Flags Entertainment Corporation and Skanska, underscores the importance of this initiative in fostering global citizenship.

Quotes from Leaders
“We are proud to support this event that allows extraordinary BridgeUSA participants to explore a new part of the United States and to experience firsthand the diversity and values that define the American spirit,” said Amy Therien, Vice President of People Operations for Six Flags. She emphasized the hope that participants would leave the summit with a profound appreciation for their international peers and clarity on their roles as global changemakers.

Carye Duffin, Senior Vice President of External Affairs at CIEE, shared insights on how this year's gathering in Myrtle Beach signifies a critical evolution for the summit, which for the first time has moved outside Washington, D.C., into communities across the country.

“BridgeUSA programs are vital to America’s future. By fostering foreign cultural exchange and building international relationships, these programs bolster America's strength through diplomacy and innovation,” Duffin remarked.

Looking Ahead
James P. Pellow, Ed.D., President and CEO of CIEE, articulated the broader mission of the summit, stating, “When the Young Civic Leadership Fellows return to their home countries, they carry with them a deeper understanding of leadership and social impact, fortified by a network of peers.” The future of global collaboration rests on the shoulders of these aspiring leaders, whose shared experiences will guide their future pursuits.

In conclusion, the CIEE Young Civic Leadership Summit not only offers young leaders a platform for growth but also serves as a reminder of the vital connections forged through mutual understanding and respect. By participating in initiatives like these, students are learning to navigate and impact an ever-complex global landscape, paving the way for a more collaborative and harmonious future.
