Illinois Bus Workers Unite with Teamsters Local 777 for Better Conditions

Illinois Bus Workers Join Teamsters Local 777

In a significant milestone towards improving their working conditions, nearly 300 bus workers from Sunrise Transportation in Illinois have officially joined Teamsters Local 777. This decision comes after these dedicated school bus drivers and monitors united to voice their demands for fair pay, enhanced benefits, and improved work environments.

Jim Glimco, the President of Local 777, expressed pride in welcoming these workers into the union, stating, "Every day, these workers are entrusted with safely transporting students to and from school. Their role is vital to families and communities across Illinois, and they deserve wages, benefits, and workplace protections that reflect the value of that responsibility."

The decision to join the Teamsters marks the beginning of a new chapter for these workers. Al Mann, a bus worker at Sunrise and a new member of Local 777, shared his enthusiasm: "We stood together because we want a voice on the job and a stronger future for ourselves and our families. By joining the Teamsters, we now have the support and resources to fight for higher wages, improved health care and vacation benefits, safer working conditions, and more."

Now that they are part of Teamsters Local 777, these workers will begin negotiations for their first collective bargaining agreement. This process will focus on securing fair wages and working conditions that truly reflect their invaluable contributions to the community.

Founded in 1937, Teamsters Local 777 represents various workforce sectors throughout the Chicago area. The union aims to improve the lives of its members by advocating for workers' rights and providing them with the necessary tools and resources to succeed in their respective fields.

As this group of bus workers prepares to embark on their negotiations, their collective efforts symbolize hope for many in the labor community. They exemplify how organizing can empower workers to effect change in their workplaces, advocating for better treatment and equitable compensation.

For new employees and advocates alike, this moment stands as a reminder of the importance of solidarity and collective bargaining in shaping a brighter future for all workers within the transportation industry.
