Truman Partners with Marriott to Introduce Luxury Hotels in Calgary's Culture District

Truman and Marriott International, Inc. have jointly announced an exciting initiative to open three luxurious hotels in Calgary, which includes the renowned W Calgary, JW Marriott Calgary, and an Autograph Collection hotel on Stampede Park. This development signifies a promising transformation in the hospitality sector of Calgary, aligning with the city's rapidly evolving Culture + Entertainment District.

The hotels are expected to commence operations between 2028 and 2030, with the project managed by local partners Truman and Louson. Positioned as two of the tallest residential towers in Western Canada, W Calgary and JW Marriott Calgary are set to elevate the city's luxury offering, providing unprecedented living and travel experiences.

Tony Trutina, COO of Truman, expressed his enthusiasm about this project, stating that their commitment to Calgary will provide a significant boost to the local economy by creating numerous construction jobs while also generating long-term employment opportunities. Furthermore, it is anticipated that increased tourism will positively impact local businesses through enhanced visitor spending.

Incorporating over 40 years of experience in high-quality development, Truman's understanding of Calgary's needs aims to create spaces that resonate with the community and its economic environment. Paul Cahill, COO of Marriott Canada, echoed the excitement, emphasizing that these hotels will bring an unmatched level of hospitality to the energetic city, and that Marriott looks forward to working closely with Truman and Louson to realize this vision.

W Calgary will stand at 69 stories high, featuring 157 guest rooms, lavish suites, and branded residences, replete with unique amenities such as a 7,500 sq. ft AWAY Spa, a signature restaurant, and expansive meeting spaces. Residents will enjoy exclusive access to the facilities along with a privately dedicated entrance.

Meanwhile, the 62-story JW Marriott Calgary will offer 248 guestrooms and 120 branded residences, harmonizing luxury with improved well-being. Guests can expect 32,500 sq. ft of meeting spaces, indoor and outdoor pools, a JW Market, a tranquil JW Garden, and a carefully curated retail area.

In conjunction with this, Truman's ongoing partnership with Calgary Stampede aims to establish a 320-key hotel within Stampede Park, also under the Autograph Collection Hotels brand. Details regarding its official name are forthcoming but the hotel promises to be distinctive, featuring a range of dining options, meeting spaces, and leisure amenities that provide panoramic views of the city.

The Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) has been pivotal in the redevelopment efforts of the Rivers District, supporting this sustainable growth that is expected to transform downtown into a lively mixed-use neighborhood. As expressed by Kate Thompson, President and CEO of CMLC, their vision for the Culture + Entertainment District, which is backed by over $2 billion in new infrastructure and cultural sites, is coming to fruition through significant private investments.

Joel Cowley, the CEO of the Calgary Stampede, added on the collaborative advantages of these hotel developments amid the growing demand for meetings and conventions. He believes these new offerings will enhance Calgary's competitive standing as a host city, reflecting the city's hallmark of exceptional Western hospitality.

The juxtaposition of over 700 premium hotel rooms with nearly 360 branded residences will address the acute demand for accommodations in Calgary's developing Culture + Entertainment District. With a remarkable projected investment of $1.47 billion from both Truman and Louson, the development is anticipated not just to enrich Calgary's skyline but also to create over 9,100 construction jobs and sustain more than 2,000 ongoing positions once operational.

Truman anticipates that this development will contribute significantly to the local economy, estimating more than $120 million in GDP from hotel operations and an extra $111 million from visitor spending annually, generating about $76 million in government revenues. As the Culture + Entertainment District strides towards revitalization, these luxurious hotels are set to become trendsetters of adventure and refined hospitality in Calgary.
