The Evolution of Travel: AI and Digital Identity Transforming Aviation's Future

The Trip.com Airline Global Conference (AGC) 2026, held in Amsterdam, brought together industry leaders from across the aviation and travel landscape, underscoring the potent role technology is playing in redefining how we travel.

At this flagship event, the theme revolved around how artificial intelligence (AI) and digital identity are fundamentally shifting the travel experience, emphasized through key presentations and discussions among airlines, airports, technology firms, and travel organizations.

A Gathering of Innovators

The conference kicked off at the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam, where leaders from prominent organizations, including the International Air Transport Association (IATA), convened to exchange insights, discuss industry evolution, and explore co-creative strategies to bolster growth. Airline partners, technology innovators, and corporate travel leaders came together to address the changing demands of the travel ecosystem.

AI in Travel - The New Frontier

This year's AGC shone a spotlight on AI's expansive influence on travel—ranging from the initial stages of travel inspiration and search to key processes like booking and customer service. During his keynote speech titled "Travelling Into the New World," Mr. Xing Xiong, COO of Trip.com Group, illuminated the rapid advancements in AI technology and its implications for online travel agencies (OTAs). He articulated how Trip.com is integrating AI not just for internal efficiency but also to optimize customer experiences at scale.

Furthermore, Ms. Amy Wei, Senior Product Director, showcased practical AI applications that streamline traveler interactions. By employing AI-driven tools like TripGenie, personalization is enhanced, making travel planning less cumbersome and more intuitive. Additionally, the integration of AI in customer service fosters trust, improving the traveler experience significantly.

Digital Identity - Simplifying Travel

In parallel to its trust building, Trip.com Group has initiated a pioneering pilot program in collaboration with IATA focusing on Customer ID digital identity. This project targets the enhancement of traveler data management by enabling secure digital identities stored in mobile wallets such as Google and Apple Wallets. Such functionality implies that booking details could be auto-filled securely, diminishing friction and boosting accuracy in reservations.

"Digital identity is a pivotal element for achieving a seamless travel experience. In this pilot with Trip.com, we aim to simplify bookings, reduce errors, and empower travelers with better control over their data," noted Mr. Nick Careen, IATA's Senior Vice President of Operations, Safety, and Security.

Future Rollout Plans

Looking ahead, Trip.com Group plans to assess the broader rollout of the Customer ID initiative, initially targeting select users in the UK and US in subsequent phases. Airlines such as Air Canada, Turkish Airlines, and Qatar Airways, along with tech partner Hopae, are slated to participate in this innovative venture.

Industry Collaboration and Growth

The selection of Amsterdam for the AGC not only emphasizes the significance of Europe in the global travel market but also reflects Trip.com's strategy to deepen its collaborative ventures across the region. According to the company’s latest data, international inbound bookings in this region have surged by 71% year-on-year, indicating a substantial recovery and growth trajectory post-pandemic.

Key discussions at the conference addressed the shifts defining contemporary travel, particularly how airlines and airports are adjusting to new traveler expectations and the ongoing relevance of low-cost carriers. The evolving nature of corporate travel, evidenced by Trip.com's own corporate services such as TripBiz, was also hot on the agenda, alongside sustainability's role in shaping a responsible future for the travel sector.

A Vision for Co-Creation

As the Trip.com Airline Global Conference underscores the essential collaboration within the travel landscape, Mr. CT Ooi, CEO of Flights at Trip.com Group, reiterated the vision for co-creation in a technology-enabled environment. He remarked, "In an interconnected travel scenario shaped by AI, collective value creation is vital. The future of airline-OTA partnerships will depend on effective collaboration leading to innovative services and customer experiences."

In conclusion, AGC 2026 encapsulates the urgency for stakeholders to adapt and innovate in an increasingly digitized and AI-driven travel ecosystem. As leaders share insights and foster synergy, the pathway to a more connected, efficient, and traveler-centric future beckons.
