Michael A. Boldt Joins Greenberg Traurig

Greenberg Traurig, LLP, a global law firm, has recently welcomed Michael A. Boldt as a shareholder in their Energy & Natural Resources Practice in Austin, Texas. Boldt, a highly respected figure in the electricity regulatory sector, brings extensive experience with the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) to the firm. His addition is part of Greenberg Traurig's strategic growth initiative in response to increasing demand in the energy sector, driven largely by data center development and grid modernization.

Michael Boldt's previous role at Eversheds Sutherland as the head of the Austin office and State Energy Regulatory Group has equipped him with sophisticated skills in navigating complex electricity regulatory frameworks. His experience includes adeptly handling high-stakes litigation and intricate transactions associated with power supply agreements, particularly for clients who require substantial electricity capacity, such as data centers.

Richard A. Rosenbaum, Executive Chairman of Greenberg Traurig, emphasized Boldt’s impressive legal talent, stating that his deep understanding of ERCOT and regulatory environments will significantly benefit Greenberg Traurig's clients. “Michael's expertise comes at a critical time when the demand for electricity is rapidly evolving,” said Rosenbaum.

Boldt’s legal practice encompasses a wide range of electricity law matters, representing various stakeholders, including investor-owned utilities, industrial clients, and electric cooperatives. He has substantial experience in multiple market operators, including ERCOT, Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), and PJM Interconnection. His legal acumen extends to navigating complex regulatory requirements that govern significant commercial transactions, ensuring clients receive reliable and strategic legal counsel across diverse scenarios.

One of Boldt's notable achievements was as special counsel to Brazos Electric Power Cooperative during its adversary proceeding against ERCOT following the infamous Winter Storm Uri crisis in 2021. There, he played a pivotal role in reducing ERCOT's $2.1 billion claim against Brazos by nearly $700 million, marking a significant victory for Texas consumers amid historically high post-storm prices.

As Greenberg Traurig continually builds its Energy & Natural Resources practice, Boldt's addition complements previous strategic hires, including Robert M. Rosenthal, who joined from the New York Public Service Commission, and Edward Roggenkamp from the Department of Energy. Collectively, these experts enhance the firm's capacity to address multifaceted challenges within a transforming energy landscape.

Co-Chairs of the Energy & Natural Resources Practice, Iskender “Alex” H. Catto, William Garner, and Kenneth M. Minesinger, highlighted the firm’s commitment to assembling a global legal team proficient in various aspects of energy law. Their practice covers a broad spectrum, from renewable energy development to regulatory compliance in traditional energy markets.

Boldt’s unmatched credentials in Texas’ complex energy market make him an invaluable asset, especially as clients navigate the tumultuous landscape of increasing load growth and regulatory complexities. Demetrius G. McDaniel, regional operating shareholder of Texas for Greenberg Traurig, reiterated the significance of Boldt's experience with critical energy crises and regulatory bodies across the state.

Earning a J.D. from Harvard Law School and an undergraduate degree, summa cum laude, from Texas Christian University, Boldt maintains a strong professional reputation. He is also a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation, underscoring his commitment and contributions to the legal field.

Expressing his enthusiasm about joining Greenberg Traurig, Boldt praised the firm's integrated platform and collaborative culture. He believes that the firm offers a unique environment for electricity lawyers like himself, boasting extensive energy expertise and streamlined teamwork across various departments dedicated to high-stakes negotiations and legal disputes.

As Greenberg Traurig goes into the future, Boldt's expertise will play a critical role in enhancing client services as they tackle the ongoing changes and challenges in electricity markets.
