Texas A&M University-San Antonio Achieves Record Enrollment for New College Students
Texas A&M University-San Antonio Sets New Enrollment Record
Texas A&M University-San Antonio marked a historic milestone for Fall 2026 as it welcomed 1,322 first-time-in-college students. This figure represents an increase from the previous year's enrollment of 1,281, demonstrating the institution's growing significance as a higher education provider for students and families in San Antonio, Bexar County, and beyond.
President Salvador Hector Ochoa expressed pride in this achievement, noting that it reflects the increasing trust families place in the university to provide a high-quality, affordable education.
Highlights of the Enrollment
The overall enrollment for Fall 2026 reached a total of 7,697 students, with a remarkable 75% hailing from Bexar County and an overwhelming 98.6% from Texas. Additionally, the university welcomed students from 25 different states and Puerto Rico. An interesting fact is that nearly two-thirds of the undergraduate population are first-generation college students, underlining the institution's commitment to expanding access to higher education.
The total credit hours for enrolled students also saw an increase, totaling 86,118 hours, up from 84,568 in Fall 2025. This rise indicates not just more students but also a greater engagement in the courses being offered.
Affordability and Support Programs
Texas A&M University-San Antonio remains dedicated to making higher education accessible, particularly for those facing financial challenges. About 60% of this semester's undergraduate students qualify for Pell Grants, and the university has initiated several programs to support these students. One such initiative is the Jaguar Promise, which assists eligible Texas students in covering tuition and fees while also providing a stipend for books. This program has seen a significant expansion, with a 21% increase in first-year students receiving this scholarship compared to the last academic year.
The university also has a strong commitment to serving military-connected students, with 16% of undergraduates and 19% of graduate students identifying as military-affiliated. This support encompasses educational opportunities as well as tailored assistance for veterans and their families.
Continuing Growth and New Initiatives
The significant growth in enrollment aligns with Texas A&M-San Antonio's ongoing expansion of academic and athletic facilities, alongside the introduction of new degree programs that address the evolving requirements of the workforce in the region.
Recently, the university unveiled its Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership program and is set to launch a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences next fall. These initiatives are integral to the university's mission to broaden access to higher education while simultaneously developing a vibrant campus on San Antonio’s South Side.
With these efforts, Texas A&M University-San Antonio is not just a place for academic learning; it's becoming a critical hub for economic and civic engagement in the community, enhancing the educational landscape for generations to come.
