Shopify Sets New Record with $14.6 Billion Sales During BFCM 2025
Shopify Japan, a leading global commerce platform, has revealed that its merchants achieved an astounding total of $14.6 billion in global sales during the 2025 Black Friday-Cyber Monday (BFCM) period. This landmark figure marks a 27% increase from the previous year, even surpassing $11.5 billion in 2024, demonstrating a significant uptick in consumer spending in an uncertain economic climate.
The sales phenomenon kicked off early Friday morning in New Zealand and spanned until late Monday night in California, engaging over 81 million consumers worldwide. This surge in shopping excitement was particularly evident during the peak sales time at 12:01 PM EST on Black Friday, where Shopify merchants recorded sales of $620 million in just one minute alone, up from $460 million the previous year.
On Black Friday, total sales reached $6.2 billion, marking a 25% increase year-on-year. Notably, the average order value across the four-day sales event stood at $114.70, with the most popular product categories being cosmetics, tops and pants, activewear, and fitness and nutrition-related items. In Japan, the sales momentum began robustly on Black Friday, indicating a solid consumer spending trend despite the ongoing economic headwinds.
In Japan, the peak sales moment occurred at 9 PM on November 30th, with Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya emerging as the top three cities for sales. Initially, BFCM had not been widely embraced in Japan; however, it has now established itself as a principal consumption event, ranking just behind the year-end shopping rush. This year, the number of Japanese consumers purchasing from Shopify merchants increased by 18% compared to the previous year, signaling a positive trend in local consumer engagement.
Over the weekend, the most ordered categories included coats and jackets, plush toys, skincare products, T-shirts, vitamins, and supplements. Reflecting on these impressive sales figures, Michio Baba, Country Manager of Shopify Japan, stated, “As the numbers suggest, BFCM, which was initially not as widely recognized in Japan, is now becoming a staple event of the season. This year has seen an 18% increase in consumers purchasing deals from local merchants, showcasing strong growth. The year-end period is typically regarded as the most crucial retail sales season in Japan, and the results indicate that BFCM is rapidly emerging as a competitive contender.”
Baba emphasized that despite economic challenges, the purchasing power of Japanese consumers remains robust. This underlines a shift in consumer behavior that favors global shopping events, indicating a promising future for BFCM in Japan.
