Elkem Unveils Innovative Recycled Silicones for the Label Sector
Elkem ASA's Silicones division recently introduced two groundbreaking products to its SILCOLEASE® series tailored for release liners. These new entries signify a commitment to promoting sustainability and circularity within the industry.
The SILCOLEASE® RE POLY 11362 and SILCOLEASE® RE POLY 368 are not just eco-friendly; they are also entirely solvent-free and made from 100% recycled silicone. According to Agnès Jolly, the head of research technology for silicone fluids at Elkem, these innovations promise the same reliable non-stick qualities and ease of release when working with self-adhesive materials that customers have come to expect.
In early 2025, extensive testing of these new recycled silicone products was conducted in collaboration with Kroenert GmbH & Co. KG, a premier manufacturer of coating machinery based in Hamburg, Germany. Ralf Thiel, a process technology engineer at Kroenert, reported that the recycled products maintained the same operational capabilities as traditional silicones, performing well even under high-speed production conditions. This demonstrates a practical and sustainable alternative to their virgin counterparts.
These novel recycled silicones are developed using Elkem’s innovative depolymerization technology, which contributes to a striking 70% reduction in carbon footprint compared to conventional materials. This development not only aligns with growing environmental demands from consumers but also positions Elkem strategically in a market increasingly focused on sustainability.
To further enlighten stakeholders about these innovations, Elkem has scheduled a specialized webinar for May 15, featuring key company experts who will discuss the specifics and implications of these new products. Clément Des Courieres, sustainability business manager, Carine Dupuit, market manager, and Sébastien Marrot, product manager, will highlight how these offerings support Elkem's broader sustainability goals and how they fit into customers' operations.
Elkem is renowned as a leading provider of advanced silicon-based materials and is dedicated to devising solutions that foster a more sustainable future. The company has built its reputation over a century since its inception in 1904, employing over 7,200 people globally. By focusing on the synergy of natural raw materials, renewable energy, and innovative technology, Elkem plays an integral role in advancements in electric mobility, digital communication, healthcare, and creating more sustainable urban environments. In 2024, Elkem declared an operating income of NOK 33 billion and has received commendable ratings on sustainability assessments, including an ‘A’ in Forests and Water Security from CDP.
As more industries seek out sustainable solutions, Elkem’s latest developments are poised to lead the way, demonstrating that eco-friendly practices can coexist with high-performance standards. For those interested in exploring these innovative products further, additional resources can be found on Elkem’s official website, along with registration details for the upcoming webinar.
In conclusion, Elkem's pioneering efforts to introduce recycled silicones not only reinforce its position within the industry but also set a benchmark for future innovations in materials science and environmental responsibility.
