Sinopec Hosts Competition for Youth Cultural Ambassadors to Foster China-Egypt Relations

Sinopec's Initiative for Cultural Exchange Between China and Egypt

On October 26, 2026, the China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation, commonly known as Sinopec, hosted the finals of a pivotal event aimed at nurturing cultural ties between China and Egypt. This competition, titled "In Search of Chinese-Egyptian Youth Cultural Ambassadors," took place in Cairo and was under the auspices of the Chinese Embassy in Egypt. It marked a significant event within the framework of the China-Africa Year of Interpersonal Exchange.

The competition had kicked off in July and attracted nearly 100 original short videos submitted by students from twelve Egyptian universities. These videos highlighted the essence of Chinese-Egyptian friendship while showcasing the enthusiasm and understanding between the youth of both nations regarding each other's cultures.

Ultimately, 30 students emerged as finalists after rigorous preliminary and semi-final rounds, with 16 participants from six different universities reaching the finale. During the final event, these students competed in three quiz rounds that included mandatory questions, rapid-fire queries, and risk assessment questions. The top five participants earned an invitation to a cultural immersion program in Shanghai and Ningbo, China.

Among the winners, Seifeldien Leisy, a junior at Cairo University, expressed the importance of learning each other’s languages and cultures. He stated that such exchanges help deepen mutual understanding, allowing young individuals from Egypt and China to learn from one another and progress collectively. Leisy hopes to have opportunities to study and work in China in the future to gain further insights into the country and the friendship through language exchange.

Lu Chunsheng, a Minister Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy in Egypt, highlighted that the competition serves as a valuable platform for youth exchange, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. He encouraged the selected students to share stories about Chinese-Egyptian cooperation and to foster friendship among their peers, promising that the embassy would continue creating opportunities for youth interactions between both nations.

Rehab Mahmoud, the Egyptian Director of the Confucius Institute at Cairo University, remarked on the Chinese language becoming a crucial bridge for both peoples as more young Egyptians take up Chinese, gaining a better understanding of China. She is optimistic that the young ambassadors will help expand these cultural bonds to reach a wider audience among the youth.

The event also featured a Chinese-Egyptian cultural fair and a photo area themed around China, giving attendees and spectators a chance to explore both cultures through quizzes and other interactive activities. Wei Dong, the head of Sinopec's Africa office, reaffirmed the company's commitment to its brand promise of "Cleaner Energy, Better Life" and emphasized its intention to closely collaborate with various sectors of Egyptian society to create more opportunities for youth exchange, furthering the strategic partnership between China and Egypt.

Through this initiative, Sinopec not only promotes cultural exchange and understanding but also strengthens diplomatic and societal ties, paving the way for fruitful interactions between future generations.
