Welcome to the First Senryu Contest at Kuramae Ryoen

The historical Kuramae area is well-known as the birthplace of senryu, a form of Japanese short poetry that conveys humor and insight into daily life through just 17 syllables. In keeping with this tradition, Kuramae Ryoen, an indoor cemetery operated by Shakkeiji Temple, is thrilled to announce its very first Senryu Contest. The theme for this year is 'end-of-life planning,' encouraging participants to reflect on the nuances of life and death through creative expression.

Contest Overview

• - Theme: End-of-life planning
• - Submission Deadline: November 10, 2025
• - Eligibility: Open to everyone, regardless of age or location. Multiple submissions are welcome.
• - Prizes:

- Kuramae Grand Prize: One winner will receive a ¥10,000 gift card plus a special gift from the Kuramae region.
- Excellence Awards: Three winners will each receive a ¥1,000 gift card.
- Shakkeiji Temple Prize: One winner will be awarded a commemorative gift.
Additional gifts will be available for pick-up at Kuramae Ryoen.

• - Selection Method: The winners will be decided through voting by visitors, the temple priest, and staff members. Voting for the Grand Prize will commence on November 16, during the Kuramae Ryoen 8th Anniversary Celebration.
• - Announcement of Results: Approximately December 10, 2025, on our official website and social media platforms.

How to Participate

We invite you to express your thoughts and moments from daily life through the art of senryu. It’s a wonderful opportunity to unite family and friends in a creative endeavor. The process of participating is easy to follow:
1. In-person Submission: Drop your entry in the contest box located within Kuramae Ryoen.
2. Mail Submission: Write your entry on a submission form (or any paper) with the necessary details and send it to the address below:
